56 Sierra MAKEOVER IS ON!

Postby greg755 » Sun Feb 01, 2009 12:38 pm

Had to sell off the woody yesterday :( Just was a little to small for us.

But it went to a good home. The guy who bought it sells old classic cars, so he is going to use it to promote his cars at car shows, rallies etc...

It's going to be a star! :applause:

SO the 56 Sierra remake is on! See photo's in my album.

I will try to update the photo's about every other day in my album so you can get your picture fix. :D

I got a three week goal to get this done so we will see how it goes.

Just a side note: I got a letter from the original owner who built these from 1954 to around 1965.

In this letter he states that 2 men could "Build one from scratch in 8 hours".

"Materials were 343.00 and $110 for Labor". he goes on to state they sold at retail for $549 and "Back in those days there wasn't much mark up"

WOW....

The inside had 2 beds with storage underneith, and a table that slid out the back and two bunks. That has all been removed as well as the galley shelves, ice box, stove and water tank.

DAY ONE
1. Took a bunch of before pictures of the inside and outside. You can see them in My Album.

2. Came up with a ruff sketch/plan

3. Got on the horn and ordered some materials.

4. Removed all outside trim and lights, will put the pictures of that in the album later tonight.

A couple of places were worse off than I thought but over all, it is in better shape than I thought it would be.

See you tomorrow...

Found this cool flyer, thinking of framing it and putting it in as "art" in the new girl...

Does anybody know what "Zolotone" or "Electrolite Under seal" is?

Hey I just figured out how to put a picture in the thread! :D

DAY FOUR

Finished putting in wheel wells.

Started on sub flooring.

Finished installing cleaned up spindles/hubs and packed bearings.

Under coated and caulked wheel wells and floor.

I think all the surprises and unexpected problems are now behind us.

So the next pictures you should see starting tomorrow should all be of new items being installed... ENOUGH OF THIS DIRTY WORK.
:applause:

So now that I am in way over my head, it is time to Introduce the Guys who are going to do all the hard work.

They get to install all the interior, electrical, gas, galley etc.

They will use some old stuff from vintage campers and new materials as well.

Hopefully the old with the new will keep a lot of the charm of the old girl. We have been talking design features (simple) for weeks now.

Meet Dan and John from : Vintage Campers in Peru, IN.
www.Vintagecampers.com

Here is John.

And here is, well you don't get to meet Dan yet because I don't have a picture.

Until tomorrow.

Vintage Airstreams used Zolotone paint for the interiors. Here is a website that will give you a good idea of the product. It has a hard surface when cured. If you click around the website, it has a good technical page if want to research even further.
