Just getting started but trying to think ahead, what do you use as your mattress?

Air Mattress?
Custom made in sections?
Foam covered home made?
???

I'm planning a 5' wide TD.

Keith,
Bought a queen size 8" Memory Foam Mattress on E-Bay for $189. and free shipping. Also came w/ removable cover.Walmart has em for $250 but at least if you get one there and you dont care for it you can take it back. We love ours so comfy and of course its easily trimmed if you need to do that.

I used custom mattress pads from the now defunct Knox Foam. Goldcoop came up with these three sources in a search.

Keith,

There is a place called Houston mattress that make select comfort memory foam mattress's, We bought one for the house for $500.00 and had it adjusted once and I cant remember when I had a better nights sleep.
We are getting a queen sized mattress and they will make it firmer or softer and cut it to any size or shape you need for $300.00 to $350.00.

What I really want to know is the darn secret to making the bed and have it look relatively nice. I have the split mattress from Little Guy that came with my Silver Shadow (5 wide), but I feel like I am forever trying to wrestle that darn thing into submission when I try to make the bed. I just try to hide all the lumps at the foot end under the shelf overhang.

I picked up a 5.5" thick queen size foam mattress from Ikea for $130.

Since I sleep on a Tempurpedic at home, I prefer a similar mattress for the TD. I don't spend Tepurpedic money on it, though. Any reasonably priced memory foam mattress will work for the 25-or-so days per year I sleep on it.

If you camp in really cold weather, beware of air mattresses. They don't have much insulating value.

I use the orginal mattress and then tried the 4-6 inch memory foam and a pad on top. Got to be a little too much and it was cold.

Then got one of those heating pads (really nice once I got it to work.) but didn't think the heat would rise up in the foam, so moved the foam home (and like it much better) and used and old fleece pad along with the heating pad.

Works well, might look into the 8" foam referred to above, but not sure the heating pad will work, so stuck in Mattress land... :cry:

Need the heating pad more than the comfort pads... plus getting too much stuff in there, height-wise.. crowds the feet...

Hi Gang,

I'm not cheap, just raising a family of 5 in today's economy, trying to build a Michelob product on a Pabst Blue Ribbon budget.

With the caveat that I do not want to use an air mattress, what is the cheap alternative for some sort of padding/mattress for the TD?

I cannot spend $300 on something we're probably only going to sleep in for 2-3 nights, 2-3 times a year.

I think the one from Wallyworld is about $225-250 for a queen size, about 8" thick and very comfy. :thumbsup:

Four inches in insulation topped by four inches of foam. The foam is covered w/ a mattress pad. I also left the back open enough so that I can slide the mattress out to change the linen.

we have a queen air mattress with 1 1/2" memory foam topper all inside a quilted cover. Sleeps GREAT

Also use 4" foam in the smaller teardrop.

Have to buy a piece of foam for the smaller teardrop before it's newowner picks it up.

Will buy from The Foam Store in Houston
