What's your favorite "Micro Brew"?

Postby Kurt (Indiana) » Mon May 04, 2009 4:03 pm

I have always been fascinated by the number of micro (and home) brewers that are popping up over the last 5-10 years or so.

Since there are so many micros to choose from, I'm curious as to which one do you like the best.

One of my favorites is Killians (red) which has been around (the USA) for many years but was never considered a "micro" since it was brewed at the Coor's brewery in Golden Colorado.
It's still a very good (IMO) beer.

Several local beers are not considered "Micro brews" but are made in relatively small quantities that they should qualify.

I love the European tasting beers especially German, they are all pretty good.

What's your favorite?

This is a toughy. There are a lot of good beers out there. Consistently over the years I've always reached for a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, though. Very consistent, very hoppy, but nice balance. Can't wait to see what everyone else comes up with. No snootiness please, we're talking about beer, now! :guzzle:

Kurt- you know what my answer is... Saranac!! Pale Ale is my favorite but they always come out with their limited runs to keep things interesting. Came out with a Maple Porter last year that I couldn't enough of. They were just named #7 craft brewer in the country. I grew up in Utica, so I might be a little biased, but I don't know of anyone who's tried a Saranac and didn't like it. :guzzle:

My husband's employees bought him a subscription to a microbrew beer of the month club. He got a 12 pack of 4 assorted beers each month and a description of each. He loved it.

Dagny, I had a subscription some time ago but when the laws changed and it had to signed for by "an adult", we ran in to a little trouble.

The UPS driver thought he was doing us a favor. He knew my wife since he was a past student of hers (ten or more years ago) so he decided to deliver it to her school.

That didn't go over well but he was just trying to help. Good try.

I used to like the "club" and the variety was always fun to get.

Saranac -the official brew of the "Spring Tearup". :applause:

Remember all those "other beers" like Utica Club, Carling, Blatz, Iroquois, Iron city, Ballantine and on and on.

They were different but I like today's beers better.

I am all over the place when it comes to beer. It really depends on my mood whether it's an ale or lager. I also try a lot of wierd brews. One of the default beers in our house is New Belgium's Fat tire.

North Coast Red Seal Ale is my Favorite.

I like their others, Old 38 Stout, Blue Star Wheat and Scrimshaw lager and Old Stock Ale with vintage dates always Old Rasputin.
As back ups there is Acme Ale, Pale Ale and Brown Ale. Acme was a west coast label through the early '60's. I have found it mentioned in a Shell Scott novel.

I must fess up one little detail, Patrick Broderick, the Brewmeister is my nephew. Trader Joe's just dropped the North Coast Brews but I was at my brother's and the Meister Kid left me an emergency case I just brought home. You can be sure it was very recently brewed.

Relationships aside I do love Red Seal and closing the evening with Old Rasputin (logo: Never say Die) :D

Still love my Utica Club, Kurt. Just bought a case the other day, I was weined on the stuff. Craft beers are great but you have to have a favorite, affordable everyday pilsener beer. :)

:) Ommegang Brewery - Belgium Style brew
They brew a few different recipes but the one my wife and I like the best is Hennepin. They are located by Cooperstown, NY, about an hour north of us. There is another brew company that comes close to it and that is Fullmoon!

Hunter
I am with you on the Ommegang!  Also a fan of Left Hand Milk Stout, and Corsendonk Belgium!. Not really a micro brew though! We also favor a local brewery called Oaken Barrel. They have a nice razzberry wheat, and a really fantastic Belgium white.

Alright, since we've delved into the regional obscurity realm, I'll add a coupla' pennies. The Draught House, one of Austin's many brew pubs, occasionally brews a Vanilla Porter that'll make you "slap your mamma", it is excellent. On rare occasion, they'll brew a Barley Wine that is so yummy you'll probably need to call a cab after having like 1-1/2 or so. Definitely a must-try if you find yourself in Austin.

My own favorite is Karl Straus Amber Lager.
German born, started a micro brew here in San Diego years ago.
He died about a year ago. But the company is going strong.
Lucky me......... :) :) :guzzle: :guzzle: :guzzle:
