Newb in Oakland

Postby Tackett » Thu Jun 04, 2009 8:10 pm

Hello TD fans,

I'm Tackett, and I'm new here and new to TDs. I'm a fabricator (welder, machinist & wood butcher) and was just hired to build a custom teardrop. I've built a bunch of different things, and have always wanted to build a TD.

I'm still talking designs with the customer (they may be on this board) but we're leaning towards a 10' Comet or a Benroy.

The customers are in L.A. and I'm in Oakland, so a blog with lots of photos is mandatory, and there will be updates here as well.

Expect lots of questions!

Tackett, I'm sorry, but you are not allowed to build a custom, professionally built teardrop trailer unless it is a Woody!.........Wow, a carpenter building a creation of his own, imagine that. I'm sure your customer will probably want a more weather-proof exterior, so you better stick to something other than wood. Let us know how the progress goes and do take lots of pics as you go along. Welcome to the board and good luck on your build.

We haven't decided on wood or aluminum yet. I see advantages and disadvantages to both, and think a lot of it will boil down to looks.

It'll spend most of its time in the alkali rich dust of the Mojave (when it's not in the garage in Pasadena). So that will be a big factor.

I'll take the material debate over to the more appropriate part of the forum, as I'd hate to anger the mods in my first post...

I love that trailer but I doubt my customer wants that exact model...
