I can't sleep! Feel trapped

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

Postby aggie79 » Mon Oct 05, 2009 5:01 pm

I am still in the building mode, but am considering getting a side tent offered by Camp-Inn:

http://tinycamper.com/accessories.htm (click on side tent on right hand side)

As far as the vent fan, you may want to add in a resistor or PWM to slow it down to reasonable sound levels. Here's a thread discussing this:

http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=25351&highlight=fantastic+resistor

I'm one of those that can't sleep for the first night in a motel because the bed and pillows are different. In the teardrop, I can at least address the pillow part and bring along my home pillow.

The first few times I used my 4 foot wide td, I would have to reach out and touch both walls, just to be certain where they were, still do it if I am camping a really dark place. Kind of wondering how I will like the 40" wide. Just a thought but maybe try a really soft light, bought some solar path marker lights at Wal_mart for 5 bucks, small and just enough light to let you see the walls, now if I could just do something about rolling over and smacking the walls.
Steve it should be easy to adjust the bed in a boat, just dig the water out from under the foot end of the boat and put it under the head end.
If I could shut my brain off, I could save myself alot of time, money and effort.

My suggestion.....drink heavily :guzzle: and you won't care where you sleep. You will be able to sleep in a bookcase if need be.

First find out if you really are Clostrophobic. Get some cloth and make a room the size of the TD including the lack of space due to cabinets. Sleep in it with your td mattress. Chairs and a table might work for a frame.

I had a problem with the odor of the new wood. Felt the same---couldn't breath and it was worse when I was in the back of the bed. I covered all that wood with Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac because it seals out odors. It worked. I have some edges that still off gass and if the TD is closed up too long I need to get out. Never been really clostrophobic.............

Some foam mattresses off gass too. Good luck

Edited to add product. 8)

I agree on several fronts with previous poster. If at all possible, replace your windows with larger ones. And since your doors are large, adding simple screens to keep at least one door open should make a big difference. I am very lucky, I actually sleep better in my TD than anywhere else. But is it 5 wide and 10 long, and it feels very spacious to both my husband and I. But I am not the least bit clausterphobic either, used to cave too!

Since you are more comfortable with the door(s) open and after looking at the pics, I also think the small windows high-up on the door may be an issue. If you can't see out, you are effectively down in a box-that would bother me too. Short of reworking the doors/windows, it seems to me that the side-tent with a door open or side screen(s) with door(s) open may work.

If I can throw my two and a half cents in here....

Miriam posted what I was thinking when I first started reading this thread. She got it on the board before me. It very well could be the smells. "Itty-Bitty" is 40" wide and just shy of 7 feet. I don't have a problem sleeping in it; but the walls have been spar varnished for over a year now and the smell still hasn't gone away. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about it yet.

You might want to try a little aroma therapy. A scented candle burnt inside for a while before you retire (blown out of course once you're in for the night). Maybe some lavender inside the pillow case? I'm told that is supposed to help you sleep more relaxed.

Others have mentioned copious amounts of adult beverages, which is fine. I'm just no longer a fan of waking up in the morning tasting the garbage truck that drove through my mouth during the night.

Trouble Falling Asleep

Postby The Teardrop Nanny » Mon Oct 05, 2009 6:43 pm

RD, I don't usually sleep very much anyway, and especially if I'm sharing a TD. I often take a Tylenol PM, or other product with a sleeping aid built in. Also, on a few of the campouts when I had to share a 4 wide with Dean, I ended up moving and sleeping in the back of the truck (air bed or Coleman flat mattress) or the cab of the truck. I am fine when I'm in one by myself. I have had an opportunity to "sleep around" in the various sizes of tears, (Yes, I'm a teardrop floozy) so if this continues to be a concern, upgrade to a 5 wide. It made all the difference for me.

I corrected that to Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac. Works great. You might want to sand and cover a piece of wood and see if you can still smell it. Only takes an hour to get that smell out.
