Coupler locks

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

Security.

If you are really concerned, just remove the tires, put em in the trunk of the TV, and any thief will have to have the correct rims, correct lug nuts, and linger while installing them and driving off. It would only take 5 minutes or so at the beginning and end of each set up! No bolt cutters in the world will get past no rims and tires! And stray dogs will have to "raise their legs" elsewhere!

Cheers,

Gus

They'll fit in the back seat! But maybe you have more than two of you. VW really ruined a good thing when they put the VW Beetle on a Rabbit/Golf chassis! Lost all sorts of interior and engine compartment room! I put 350K miles on my 79 diesel!

Cheers,

Gus

Low cost.
Good idea.

Obviously, not perfect but a very low budget move that can be "one more step".

I'm going to use the wheel lock with locking lugnuts that my dealer is throwing in with the deal. After that my insurance company can deal with it.

I use the coupler locks on both my trailers and no one has messed with them yet.

wire a car horn to the trailer wiring, we put a wire from the brake light switch to the horn in peoples cars at tech school as a practical joke, one guy drove across town to the admin bldg. and got pulled over because of it.
I installed that Idea permanently in my last truck with a hidden switch as a cheap alarm, EVERYONE will notice the trailer or car with the horn stuck on as it drives away!

For those of you with an onboard battery.... How about a car alarm? I bet it would garner attention in a nice quiet campground if it went off. There is many levels of security with that. First the doors can be protected to set it off if opened, hatch the same way, you can get a proximity sensor, shock sensor, then of course with the dome light trigger wire, tie into a brake light wire to set it off.

Sure its extra wiring but if your concerned....

I am a believer in helping people stay honest, but if someone REALLY wants something you own, they will get it. I use a padlock on the coupler, both in my garage and at the campsites. We have never had any problems with anything disappearing.

Most thieves want to go unnoticed and will tend to go for the easy mark. Any coupler lock or similar deterrent will generally work. Another thing to keep in mind, little trailers are very unique and stand out. People tend to notice, 'those crazy folks with the little trailer'. ;) We have a coupler lock and I'm likely not going to add much more. If we feel like the campsite is unsafe, we'll probably not stay.

I usually don't unhook, but when I do I use the cable lock that came with my shotgun, maybe the logo on it will add that extra incentive to walk away :)
