Chili Fritos bag dinner

Postby Woodbutcher » Sat Jul 10, 2010 9:21 pm

I found this recipe on a website www.thecookingguy.com It was not listed as a camping dinner, but why not. Very few dishes to boot.

Here is a copy from the website.......

This is one of those things that people make fun of until they try it - then, they're hooked. But you must have those little individual sized bags of Frito's for it - the fun is eating it right out of the bag.
Ingredients

* Any chili - yours, your mom's, or out of a can (the can is easier)
* Fritos, the individual sized bags
* Shredded cheddar cheese, sharp
* Hot Sauce

Steps

1. Heat chili
2. Open Frito bag
3. Spoon some chili in the bag - yes, IN the bag
4. Top with some cheese, IN the bag
5. Add a few drops hot sauce, IN the bag
6. Add a spoon and eat, OUT of the bag

That's called a "Frito Pie", a staple food in Texas.

After high school I worked for 7 Eleven's in Lubbock, TX on the late shift (11pm-7am) and I always called that "The after club meal". The drunk people who had been out partying would stop by between 1am- 3am and buy the small grab bags and fill will the chili, nacho cheese sauce, onions and jalapeno's in the bag and a big gulp and that took care of the munchies. I would have to wait til 4am to clean up on thurs, fridays, and saturday nights because of it. I'm still hooked on doing it that way even at home.

ain't just a staple, it's a food group.

From a Big Spring, Texas 7-Eleven, the 2 a.m. "back from the ball game" raid-on-the-hot-bar edition:

1 large OM all-beef hot dog, no bun ($1.99)
1 99-cent pkg Fritos (not single serving size but not the big bag)
4 tbsp chopped onions, from the hot dog bar (free off the nacho bar)
1 microwave cup Wolf Brand Chili, nuked by the directions ($1.29)
$1 worth of 3-for-$1 Kraft Sharp Cheese Snacks ($1)
2 bottles IBC root beer, cold ($2.25)

1 plastic knife & 1 plastic spoon, handful of napkins

Buy the fritos, the hot dog, the chili, cheese and root beer. Lay the Frito bag in the hot dog box. Slice the dog into thin slices. Tear the seam of the Fritos open, pour in the onions, start the chili in the store microwave. Open one root beer and drink it. Use the plastic knife to chop the cheese into very small pieces. Pour the hot chili over the Fritos and hot dog. Sprinkle the chopped cheese over the chili. Add more onions if you want. Let stand long enough to walk back to your car. Open the other root beer first. Eat the Frito pie out of the bag, wash down with the root beer.

Sonic Drive-In (c'mon, nothing better than a drive-in) still has them on their menu. We make them at home, too! Glad to hear someone else likes them. Kinda' like everything hash browns from Waffle House or Denny's. YEAH, BUDDY!

Gonna' have to consider this for our TD trips. :thumbsup:
