Tagging Teardrop in Kansas

Postby bfacklam » Mon May 02, 2011 8:44 am

I have a question on how Kansans tag their tear drops. Ottawa County charged me $104 for a RV trailer tag. Now they are going to change it to $24 and pay property tax in December for a non RV trailer tag. I understand trailers under 2000 pounds do not need to be tagged in Kansas, but we are traveling through many states this summer and want to avoid any tag issues in other states. What do other Kansans pay for their tear drop tags? Do other trailer owners pay personal property taxes on their teardrops.

Thanks for any help.

Welcome to Kansas.... Lol
Yes you will pay personal property tax on your teardrop here in Kansas.
Now the price of tagging and Tax's for your teardrop will more then likely be based on what the value of it is.
Get a tag for it, it will save you a few headaches down the road.

You might want to tell them it's a covered trailer and really not an RV and if that helps with things.

Good luck....

No tags for me. Olathe Ford RV verified that under 2000 lbs it does not need to be licensed. Haven't paid a penny, except for higher tolls, since 2007 and never been stopped in Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, or Louisiana for not having a tag. I don't pay any taxes for my trailer either, probably because it's not registered.

You should have told them it's a utility trailer.

Yep, what Darren said. If it's under 2,000 loaded, you don't have to tag it. There are some things to consider, though. If you want to get it insured I'm pretty sure you'll have to get a VIN # from the highway patrol so your insurance company will consider it a "real" camper. Once you have your camper in the system, they'll stick you evey year for personal property taxes just like the vehicles you drive.

As far as driving through states that have tag laws on all trailers, YOUR home state laws follow you. If you're paranoid about it, get one of those "UNDER 2000 LBS." plates at your local RV dealer and hang it on your TD.

I got my trailer plate stolen in Memphis last year. Haven't been stopped in AR, TN, or MO. I might put a new one on this year.

Jeff: Here's a different take on the "home state rules" issue. Last year at a Vermont campground we met a couple from California that had just picked up a new Camp-In teardrop from the factory, I think in Wisconsin?? Anyway that state didn't require a license plate, but when they got into Vermont some small town cop made a big fuss about no plate and gave them a ticket and made them get a Vermont tag. They were extremely annoyed over all that, plus the expense of it! So having some kind of tag may save a problem. I just saw on this forum or maybe on Tearjerkers that someone was able to get a nonresident trailer registration in Maine. Did it online, quick & easy, and I believe inexpensive. I see a lot of non-Maine trucking companies running trailers with Maine plates, must be cheaper to license them there. Bob
