New piece of equipment....

Postby Pottercounty » Sat Apr 30, 2011 2:36 pm

Just got one of those aerodynamic shells for the fantastic fan, $20 bucks at Camping World. Now I can leave my vent wide open without fear of rain...

Those are a great addition. And you can leave the vent open going down the road too, sure helps on a warm day 8)

I don't think I would have a vent with out being able to keep it open during a rain storm. Good buy you'll like it.

I used to leave my pickup camper roof vent up a couple of inches while driving and it seemed to do OK. Those covers are a great idea, but alas, one would not work on the PT as it's main feature is to be able to store it in a garage or carport and it will just barely clear with the low profile 3" dome on my Fantastic fan.

About 40 years ago, my Mom and Dad had an Eriba (They lived in Florida as I do). They kept it in the carport of their home. I was amazed how easy it was to move it around on the concrete floor. They towed it with a '63 VW beetle across a lot of the US.

The Beetle in the picture appears to be a '66 which would have had a 1300 cc 50hp engine if it were stock. A 63 would not have the sloted wheels, the flat hubcaps, and the windows would have been smaller and the vent wing post would be vertical rather than slanted back-a-wards. A 64 can't be distinguished from a 63 from the front. A 65 would have the big windows, slanted vent wing post, and rounded hub caps. A 67 would have the sealed beam headlights w/o the glass cover and the lights would be vertical rather than with the sloped covers.

Only a '66 VW (unless someone had modified perhaps a 65 or 67) would appear as the one in the picture does.

Cheers,

Gus

Gus, you are correct. I had forgotten that Dad had replaced his first Beetle, the '63 with a '66 model. You have a sharp eye for detail. This is Dad's '63 Beetle towing a small cargo trailer that he converted to a sleeper in less than a week when he and Mom made a spur-of-the-moment decision to drive from Florida to Alaska (circa 1960-64). It wasn't quite a teardrop, but it did the job with a window on each side and a rear door. They needed to drive home in less time than it took to get to Alaska, so they sold the trailer before returning home.

My first car was a '66 VW Bug. It was already 10 years old with over 100,000 miles on it when I got it. I think I put another 150,000 on top of that. It was an amazing car.

(Yes, I know, bad to continue the hijack.)
