Saint Paul Minnesota to Fort Benning Georgia

Postby PKCSPT » Tue May 03, 2011 3:14 pm

Planning our trip for family day at Fort Benning Georgia in June. :applause: YAAAAYYYY!

Seems the straightest route goes through Chicago and the tollways.
Those don't bother me much, be fun to do again and see if any of the restaurants that go over the freeway are still there. Haven't been through there in 35 years with my parents.
Anybody know how much the toll is? Back then it had to be coins, do they still take cash and or debit cards?
Not taking the teardrop so no trailer fee, unless the husband can't go then I will camp on the way down and back in it,

But for now just a car is in the plans.

My recommendation is to stay away from Chicago and the toolway. Here is a link to the Illinois Tollway and it has the rates and vendors at the oases':

Going through Chicago I always prefer to avoid the long lines at the staffed booths. I bring a pile of change and things go much more smoothly. I also prefer to go through in the middle of the night to avoid traffic...

Well, that was before I tried turning off at Rockford. 39 / 57 / 24 / 75 just works better for me (your mileage may vary). Now I always go that way to GA / FL.

Have a safe trip!

Pete, That route is the one I take through Illinois. It is MUCH better! One time I got stuck in traffic in Chicago and it took me 6 hours to make it through town. That's when I started taking YOUR route. A few more miles but shorter in time.

Yeah, Chicago can be a mess, even on weekends, I was doing 294 loop for a while and that was better. You still have to deal with Indiana...

With or without the trailer I suggest you take Tim's route...

Will look that route up on the map. Thanks for the toll info too.
Been to a lot of states but not Georgia or Alabama, so excited to see Patrick and some new states.

Most of the tolls going around Chicago were $.80 when I was there a few weeks ago. The roads were in the best condition I have ever seen them, and hardly any construction going on. :D

Anybody go down through Iowa. According to mapquest it doesn't take much longer.

Went through there myself this past weekend and roads are great. Stay away from the Loop and you will do fine. Come by way of Rockford and you will miss half the toll road around Chicago.

Don't be scared. The tollway is usually going way above the speed limit. About the only time it slows down is morning rush hour. If you are going through after 9AM you will sail through. Besides you are going to take 294 south off I-90. That is not really close to Chicago congestion.
You will be disappointed at the Oasis restaurants. Just a bunch of the same fast food places you have at home.

Please consider traveling the Illinois tollway. We are 14 billion in debt and could use the help.

Have a great trip!

We have taken all the the described routes from the twin cities to Indianapolis numerous times. For ease of travel any time of day the best route we found was through Iowa, quad cities etc. Very close to the same distance and we could always plan on making good time. The quad cities is a small metro area of only a couple hundred thousand folks so traffic was never a real consideration.

Howdy,

I avoid Chicago and its toll roads like the plague. If it weren't for toll roads, Chicago wouldn't have any modern freeways.

Last summer when I got off the 88 tollway and on the I94 north near O'Hare, I was charged $4.25 for my car and the single axle travel trailer. From here as I can remember, I paid through the nose until I reached the Wisconsin stateline.

Don't ever take I94 to the east side of Illinois to I57 not even in broad daylight. This route takes you through the south side of Chicago where "Bad, Bad LeRoy Brown is meaner than a junkyard dog!" My Texas plates get me safely through there.

If I were going to the deep South from MN, I would take I94 from Minneapolis to Madison where it becomes I90/I39 to Rockford, I39 to Bloomington, and then I74 to Indianapolis. Only one Illinois toll for about ten miles at Rockford.

Illinois and Wisconsin have maximum archaeic speed limits of 65mph and the state patrols like to write tickets for the slightest infraction of any kind because both these states are essentially bankrupt.

Take care,
Maury

Your'e the 3rd or 4th person I have heard say that recently, being from Wisconsin I just thought 65 on the freeway/ interstate and 55 on the highway was the speed limit through out the country. What are the speed limits in other states?

In Calif. the limit is 70 on most interstate highways, 65 on freeways, 55 on highways.

But max 55 everywhere for trailers, even on the 70 MPH interstates
