Thanks John

John, the 30A fuse at the power center is to protect it and anything connected to it...the use of a 30A fuse at the battery is to protect the wiring from the battery to the power center...it's use is up to you...................

Yes.

If there is a short to ground from the wire running from battery posative terminal to power center, it will blow the power center fuse, but if the battery is not fused as well, you will still short the battery posative terminal to ground.

I think you missed it on that statement....

IF fuse is down steam of short it does no good....

Simple answer a fuse or circuit breaker protects everything after it.

battery---fuse----wire----power center with fuses/circuit breakers---wire----switch---light

in this case the first fuse protects everything from battery to the power center.
the fuses/circuit breakers protect everything from power center to what every they feed lights, furnace, TV's ect.

by protecting everything after the fuses they also help protect the thing in front ex: a short without a fuse could cause the battery to explode.

add a fuse be safe.

The fuse is inside the power center, pretty hard short out upstream of that fuse. On the battery side you gotta get the fuse as close to the terminal as you can.
