2 weeks off, where would you go?

Postby wincrasher » Thu Aug 04, 2011 6:38 pm

It's still a few weeks to go before I take delivery of my new TD.

I'm considering taking 2 weeks off and going on a road trip with it. But where to go? I'd love to go out west, but it would be just enough time to drive there and back, so I think I'm confined to east of the Mississippi.

So where would you go? Would you travel every day, or would you go somewhere and sit?

Guess I need ideas to get the travel juices flowing.

Two weeks

I would pull out the map, close my eyes and plop my finger down and start there. When I plan a road trip I usually check "points of interest" section on my AAA maps and look for things that coordinate to where I am headed. I find lots of new destinations and interesting things out there. I also tend to get off the highway and take smaller roads. It is amazing what is out in the middle of nowhere.

Believe it or not, it's not as hot down here as is it up there. We're only hitting mid 90's. 8) There's a pretty cool place in Northern Florida called Ginnie Springs. It's in the High Springs area. There are 7 natural springs on the property. A tubing river connects them. Nice and cool, relaxing, good tree canopy to shade all of the sights. Electric sites are about $50/night for 2 people, and they have scuba diving as well. Really a fun place, and private, not state owned.. so alot more is, ahem, tolerated

Of course, if I was up there, I think I'd have to head to the Smokey Mountains. It's gotta be nicer up there doesn't it? Bryson City area, maybe some tubing/hiking. My girl's been after me to head up that way all year.

If I had a new trailer, or new to me trailer, and the time and funds to do two weeks, I'd pick two or three places fairly close to home, maybe within 2-300 miles.

I'd set up and enjoy a few days just relaxing to get into the vacation mode while figuring out all the little things I needed for the camper, or that I wanted to add or change.
Then choose another spot and really get the vacation spirit going. :relaxing:
A good week or so.
Finally, I'd head toward home, but find a nice place and spend the last few days enjoying the camper and planning the next trip. :vroom:
Waiting for "someday" will leave you on your deathbed wondering why you didn't just rearrange your priorities and enjoy the time you had, instead of waiting for a "better" time to come along...

I'd hit the Smoky Mountains. Maybe head over to Cumberland Falls and up to Mammoth Cave. Catch a few things on the way back. I'm not one for sitting in one place very long. Search the forum for camping lists. Stock what you can and buy what you find you need along the road. My first trip in 1985 with our then new pop up was from Chicago to Mt. Rushmore, Deadwood and the Badlands and off to Yellowstone. Then on to Spokane Washington. That was a 2 week trip and we had plenty of time. The secret of a teardrop is how quickly you can stop and set up. Open the Galley and your ready to go. If I am only stopping for the night I don't even unhook from my TV or set up the shelter. Saves time on both ends. Have fun where ever you go and take lots of pictures,

Last June my wife and I flew to Philly and spent a week there. We saw Philly, the USNA, Gettysburg, Valley Forge, Hershey Pa., Ft. Mc Henry, and points inbetween. Lots to see and do in the area.

Cheers,

Gus

If I had two weeks and it was crazy hot like it was last month, I'd consider the James Bay Highway in northwestern Quebec.

I'd like to head down to western coast of Florida and do some snorkeling.

I think scalloping is still going on on the west coast of Florida. Though I thought I heard they're a little deeper now. Not a problem if you've got a tank, or a hooka-rig.

I'm with the last two posters. If you can wait till October or November when its a little cooler, a trip down to the Florida Keys would be wonderful.

You could also spend some time in Disney World. I heard the place is literally dead the week after labor day.

These are all great ideas. 2 weeks in the Keys would be plush - but not until this winter.

Mountains is probably more likely if I do this in September. Hopefully some places will be more pleasant since we'd be past the summer vacation season.

Do you find the TD more enjoyable on a trip moving place to place rather than just sitting around? Seems like the big type camper is more for parking and sitting than the TD.

I would stay away from south Florida and Disney till the weather cools off. The heat in the keys/Orlando is stifling right now, and there are a large number of tourists in both places.

The upper west coast of Florida, the panhandle, and the springs in central north Florida are all laid back places where there's enough forest to help quell the heat. It's hard to beat a shaded 72F spring, in the shade, to cool off

Did I mention all of those places are far and away cheaper than the Keys/Orlando?

If you do decide to head down to the Keys it would be a good Idea to make reservations early like now!

I would rather move around until I find a spot I like then stay a while.

I too was in Philly and atlantic city last year and we stopped by valley forge on the way home you have to remember that the way it is today isn't the way it was back when GW was there it was laid out more like a town.

up the east coast is also fun.

I wish you a safe trip no matter where you go.

If you want to go somewhere in September thats not too far from where you are you can go west and visit the Asheville, NC, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg areas of Tennessee. There is a lot to do in those areas and the scenary is beautiful. If you haven't been, the Biltmore Estate is fantastic to see. If you happen to be looking for furniture for your house you can stop off in Hickory, NC which is like the furniture capital of the US.
