Temp hatch support punctures galley lid AGAIN!

Postby Roly Nelson » Mon Aug 08, 2011 2:39 am

Some accidents in my shop, seem to happen, again and again. When will I ever learn? 9 years ago, during the building of my woody, I propped up the hatch lid with a 2x2 and the tongue slipped off of the 5 gal bucket, and Wham-o, I blew a hole right through the hatch lid. (Had to cover it with an old bullet-riddled no trespassing sign. Then, the same thing happened about a year ago, with my 6ft Stacker, before permanent hatch holders were in place and the resulting patch can hardly be seen under the many coats of paint.

Today, while rolling my 3x3 experimental TD out of the shop, with the hatch holders removed for finishing, the offset in the garage slab jolted it enough to flip the galley lid up and down, and Wham-o, I did it once again, this time with a 3/4 inch dowel pin! Fortunately the hole is right at the bottom of the hatch lid and can be covered with the hand-carved bumper/sign, which simply reads, "3x3 Teardrop Trailer" (for the less informed tailgaters).

I usually carve a wooden mustache and glue it over my mistakes, but this time, it'll only be seen when the galley is open. Hmmm, is this bit of carelessness due to the anxiousness to Git 'er done, or is it somehow septuagenarian related? If so, I shudder to think the mistakes I'll make next year, when I am an Octogenarian.
:? 8)  Roly, planning the maiden voyage in 5 more days. (Had to look up Septuagenarian :-)

Sounds like Karma to me
How about making a generic prop rod with a very large padded end for future use?

Durring my current build my hatch has attacked ME! twice.
The first time I was working on enginering the electric lift when the temporary piano hinge I was using gave way,the back (sharp) edge hit me in the fore head :? knocking me to my knees as I some how caught the hatch with my hands, landing on my back. Then the blood started,by the time I got to the house I could hardly see.
Then a few months latter I was working under the hatch,I just had the electric lift fastened with 1 screw in an open ended hole. You guessed it,the darn thing jumped out,the hatch came down and caught my temple removing a large pc. of skin and again, more blood.
The main cause both times was getting in a hurry and not making sure everything was bolted down tight. After these 2 things and the heat we've had Im thinking of calling my tear "Blood Sweat and Tear".
And no I don't have pictures

If you keep doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different out come but it never happens....

Albert Einstein had a word for this...

If you build in the same spot in your garage, why not hang a safety hook.
