I did old VW's for years and the Germans must have had Lucas advisers because they too had the four positions OFF, DIM, FLICKER and SMOLDER.

This is our little money-pit. No way we can tow the teardrop with her but they still look nice together. Rob does a particulary nice "getting in dance". She is a 1961 MGA and I have owned her since 1966.

While you are all laughing at the wonderful work of Joseph Lucas, I'll point out that the reputation of electrics in older American cars in Britain is no better. I guess it's true to say at that age they have twice as many electric things to go wrong as do European cars, so that may be where the reputation comes from.

And for the scary bedtime story, when the Ural (Russian) motorcycles were first imported to Britain, during the Soviet days, owners used to replace their electrics with Lucas parts in order to make them work reliably.....
