Family camping in the bachelor teardrop ;)

Postby Mauleskinner » Sun Sep 11, 2011 4:32 pm

Built my 4x8 teardrop a couple of years ago when I was a single man, and now we're figuring out how to camp as a family with it.

Since my wife ran a triathalon with one of the older daughters earlier this year, Emma (just turned 9) decided she needed an "event with Mom", too, so we decided on a bicycling/camping trip.

I took the day off Friday, took the trailer to a nearby state park (Fort Ridgely), and set up camp.

Had to get a little creative to keep Emma's sleeping quarters close by...

Yes, that's duct tape holding tarps together.

My Mom drove out to give me a ride back, I got bikes ready, picked up Emma after school, and she and I started riding to the park. When Elisabeth got off work, she hopped on her bike and headed out. Since Emma and I were only riding about 8 mph, Elisabeth caught up with us about 3/4 of the way there. It's a nice, scenic 18 miles from our house to the campground. 8) No pics of that, but on Saturday we rode the bike trail from the state park to a nearby town.

Of course, all the usual stuff...hopping rocks in the creek...

...toasting marshmallows and making s'mores...

Generally a good time with my new family, largely made possible by the teardrop. I just have to make some adjustments to make it more family friendly...got the square gazebo tent with sides on order, and I think we can figure out how to set that up as a vestibule with the camper off one side for Elisabeth and me (still newlyweds, so a 4' wide isn't too small yet ;)), and another tent set up off the other side of the gazebo.

Just thought I'd share.

Every time I drive by Ft. Ridgely I think I should go camping there. Would have been a lot easier when I lived in hutchinson, mn. Now that I live in Nebraska it is probably not going to happen.

I went from 6 open projects as a single guy to 7006 as a married guy...that would be probably #7007.

I've lived within 25 miles of it for over half my life...my first time into the park.

Me too. It's so close to me that it is actually one of the last state parks I plan on going to.
