Down side of building a TTT in Florida—DEALING WITH THE DM

Postby cracker39 » Wed Oct 05, 2011 3:18 pm

I took all of my receipts, weight slip, and photos of my PT to the DMV. Just like the last time, five years ago, no one in the DMV office had a clue about how to register a home-built trailer (i.e. in Florida DMV lingo, an “assembled from parts trailerâ€

NEVER EVER volunteer any information when dealing with and state DMV drones...... Only answer their questions with minimal information so you don't confuse them....

Dealing with the DMV is like getting pulled over by a cop. Keep you hands where they can see them, answer questions with a 'yes' or 'no'.

Good to hear that you can go down the road all legal like.

Sounds like a really good plan. So what is number 3 going to be?

I"m glad you got through all that, I sent my wife to register our TD- she's better at that sort of thing. I think I just sent her with a ticket from the landfill scale. The less info, the better.

I would love to see the PT someday, I'm just over in Lakeland.

Have fun taking it out now that the weather is cooling off.

I had no issues whatsoever when I went to get my Teardrop tag. I told them it was a home-built trailer, produced the bill of sale and that was that. Paid my fee and got my tag.

Now, it looks like I have to go have fun with the DMV again. My little one-person pontoon boat I am building has to be registered and titled as it will be powered by a small electric trolling motor. If a boat is powered by electrical or mechanical means, it has to be titled no matter how small. My pontoon boat is costing me about $250 to build and weighs 105 lbs, yet it has to have a title and boat sticker and numbers on the "hull", which I guess is one of the pontoons. The DMV probably won't know how to do this one either since I made it.

It's not finished yet. I'm finishing up the fiberglass resin and cloth tape tomorrow and starting the priming and painting. I plan to use it while camping next week. The pontoons will go on the truck cap on a rack and the platform inside the back of the truck for traveling. I'll post photos when it's finished.
