Side Tents

Has anyone designed there own side tent and either had it made or made it their self?
I would like to see some pictures of side tents and different ideas as I'm thinking i might need one.
What material did you make them out of? can you keep heet in them or are they cool in the winter?
In the summer can you keep heat out of them?
What about rodents and other pests can you keep them out and not chew holes?

Here is a little different approach that normally seen. On awning and side tent that can be used together or separately.



Did't make this one, but have made a few tents.
I personally like to use poly/cotton blend or treated cotton canvas.
A single wall fabric tent will hold heat but normally at the cost of condensation. They get heat in the Summer unless you have a fly.
Haven't had something chew their way into a tent, a big stick solves that problem

These look great but at an average of $1000 I think I could build a good part of a teardrop for that.

Paha Que has and can make side tents and tarps and make them for a couple of the teardrop manufacturers. A good bit depends on what you want it for, additional living space, screen house... I have talked with Jeff at Paha Que about making a side tarp that can include a shower tent and or screens and or... From what I have heard they are now selling the rear tarp idea I had. I added Kedar/awning rail to three sides of the tear and have three tarps smaller ones for each side and the rear tarp is 6' wide at the tear opens out to 14' wide and 14' long. I will eventually have them add screening.

Problem I see is no manufacturer is willing to step out and make a more generic type tent/screen room, and/or shelter that could be used with most any tear drop, manufactured or home built. I think there is a market here that's being over looked.

The teardrop and small trailer market is growing. Evidence is here in this forum by the number of new members each day and I'm sure not everyone interested in a tear or small trailer is on this forum. It baffles me that companies like Paha Que seem to ignore this expanding market with products limited to just a few.

While I only have the awning that attaches to either side (don't need the full tent thing), side panels with zipper tops to attach and vinyl windows could be easily made to attach to this awning. Marti's Awnings made this one for me...great work and can custom make what you want in a variety of colors. This one is made in Sunbrella. Doug

The OZtents are nice but over priced IMHO, the one in my above post is similar to their RV-2 for less than half the price, it's called a Sahara Tent

I thought Driod's post was about making your own? For production ones there is a new Awning / Side tent that I've recently got in that might work nicely with the Teardrop shape. It has an elastic connector panel and two screened with solid flaps end panels that come with it. If there are folks close to me in Salem, OR with a Teardrops, would love to set one up with a few different Teardrops to see how well the elastic conector panel works with them.

This worked well for me but I do not know if they still make them. The window space could be closed for privacy.


And it was a quick flip to use it over the kitchen area.

Makes a nice potty or shower tent, but not much else. Best news is can be attached to either side and would adapt to configurations other than the Camp Inns. Downside is size and price, almost 300 for a shower tent a bit much in my opinion.

They are actually pretty popular & were originally developed as a result of requests for place to stand & dress along with a place for a porta potty. If you are wanting a full size tent, there are already plenty of large manufactured SUV type tents available that will work with a teardrop.

Also, these are not mass produced in China...handmade by a gal in Wisconsin, so the price isn't out of line.

I have one of the Kelty side tents (pics above) AND a Tailgator, which I first saw at the 2009 Tear-Up on a teardrop from Canada. The woman's name was Syl, the husband's name escapes me. But they had three of them extending off the two side doors and hatch of their tear, which made it kinda look like a spider. Bone dry underneath (although it POURED) and none of them flinched in the wind. I asked them if they made them and they gave me the US website: TailgatorUSA

It has LIVED in my Jeep Patriot for about a year because it also works on the hatch of my Jeep. It would be easy to hang side panels (either screened or solid) with clips off the Tailgator.

Haven't tried either the Kelty side tent or the Tailgator with my new tear, but both worked with the Sunspot, and should work with the tear just fine.

And I love that both together weigh less than my old EZUP, and one-person setup.
