How thick are your walls?
Are they insulated?

Some walls are only 1/2" thick... that would be the Giant Teardrop for example, with 1/2" plywood walls.

Some other walls are 2" thick... that would be the standie foamie, made out of 2" EPS. It's not covered with canvas yet. That will of course add to the thickness.

My next build, which will be the curved winter warrior, will have walls somewhere inbetween 1" and 2". I haven't worked out the hatch yet, but if the hatch is 3/4" thick, the the main wall need to be something like 1 3/4" thick...

You're gonna get a gazillion answers for these questions, but here's mine: it depends on your chosen build method. Here's what I do ... obviously, others will advise differently ... ;) ...

How thick are your walls?

About 1" ... I use either 1/2" or 5/8" plywood, cookie-cuttered, with either 1/4" or 1/8" paneling inside and 1/4" luan outside, 1/2" foam-board insulation fit into the voids of the plywood before exterior sheathing is applied.

Are they insulated?

Yes ... see above.

Floor thickness?

3/4" plywood. IMHO, built-up floors w/insulation are a waste of time, effort, & materials ... IF your mattress will be covering the entire floor, but I've had exposed floors in several of my TDs and never had a problem.

Thanks for all your help

Good Luck, and as always ...

Having 3 tiny trailers in the drive I have different answer for all three.

The best of the 3 is my latest 4x7 with 1 1/2 polyisocyanurate foil faced foam in the roof. 1" blue foam for the sidewall insulation and 1 1/2 of blue foam simply laid on the floor under the foam mattress. The profile was cut from 7/16 osb with filon facing on the outside. The sidewall foam was simply wrapped with a nice soft material and force fit into place. It give a nice finished look to the walls The roof received a scrap of the same filon that was used outside. I will be taking this one for our January Shivaree as it heats well with little effort and with a little planning I am sure it will cool well with A/C as easily. Some say floor insulation is unnecessary but I like it ! I have 1 1/2 inches of floor insulation in all 3 builds. All 3 have 1" or more in the sidewalls and the only one not to have at least 1 1/2 inch in the ceiling is the teardrop with the see thru roof. This baby is cold as hell in the winter as all the heat rises and moist air will actually condense on the lexan.

here is a couple pics of the little 4x7.....Image

Mine are 1.5" with 3/4" insulation sandwiched. 1/2" outter, 3/4" insulation and 1/4" inner wall.

If I were to do it again. I would use 1/4" outter ply on the walls and roof to reduce weight. The walls are way stronger than they need to be for my trailer.

The Floor is 1/2" outter, 3/4" insulation and 1/2" inner to carry what ever load I need to on the floor.

Just finished my first teardrop build, a modified (Mike's) ultralight. Will add to the build journals when my computer gets back from being repaired.

Here's what I did:

3/4in marine plywood floor, spar urethaned on the bottom and edges. No black goop.

5/8in marine ply walls. No insulation in the walls.

1in foam insulation (2 1/2in. thick pieces) in the ceiling.

Have camped in 40 degree weather so far with no heater and was fine in medium grade camp sleeping bags (with vent and windows cracked).

For a small TD (mine is 5 x 8 ) the 5/8in walls are plenty stiff. If I were doing it again I might use 1/2in marine ply in the walls (to save some weight) and just add 1/4 trim strips around the door and windows to make a 3/4in thick frame for those areas.

Depending on the day... I'll use either Lightworks, Bunkspeed or Keyshot.

My .02......Agree with Grant Whipp on floors...3/4" ply with a matress for insulation.

Walls on my build were kind of different than those i`ve seen here. Base attachment was a 12" tall band of 3/4 ply....bolted to frame. To this `base band` i inletted two posts that tranfered strength to future roof. The posts wer 1 1/2 thick. Outer skin was 1/4 luann...inner skin too. 1 1/2 thick void was filled with a sandwich of foam silver board insulation....total wall thickness was 2".

My walls, roof and floor are 1 1/2 inches of insulation - the interior walls are 1/8inch cedar strip before sanding. Will float insulation on top of my framing and insulation. Floor is 1/2 inch thick biscuit joined cedar. May be overkill but wanted to be able to camp in any weather.
