My backpacking dad sewed his first tent from a torn spinnaker a sailing buddy of his was throwing out. (Just as an aside, he sewed the sail for the lateen sail on our modified canoe from a discarded tent.)
Okay, I wouldn't sew a mock-up from muslin, as (1) it doesn't sew anything like canvas or nylon, (2) it stretches way different from canvas or nylon and would not give the right impression when you tried to set it up, and (3) if your first effort is pretty-close-to-right, having it out of pretty-close-to-right fabric would make it useable right away.
Try contacting someone in your town or the nearest larger town who sews awnings, and see if you can buy scraps or bolt ends or mill ends to try out.
