Awning

Postby cuyeda » Fri Nov 11, 2011 12:11 pm

While putting together my wish list, I came across this awning product. Haven't priced it out yet, but the functionality has good possibilities.

I was actually looking at the fridge, and the slide rack! Oh, and the roof rack looks nice. Did I mention the roof tent.

The added side tent has good possibilities. I have seen another awning a few years ago, but was difficult to find vendors selling it. Nice to have another resource for different vendors.

iplay10us2, I'm an authorized dealer for Mombasa Outdoor.

Do have another nice awning / side tent option. Been trying to get over and set one up with a Teardrop at Oregon Trail'R in Eugene, OR.

All these are great and some not far off what we're looking for, but still not exactly the item. We would like something like an SUV tent, but more open like a screen room that would attach to the rear as the SUV tents do. We are not interested in privacy, but some bug protection and sun/rain cover.

I am thinking I could make one of those roundish ones. A few tent poles, some fabric, 4 or more grommets.....hmmmm.

A question for anybody who has made awnings and tents. Do you start with a prototype made out of some kind of cheap fabric? Something that no way could be used for the actual awning, but is needed to see how it can be done?

I'm thinking about trying it with cheap muslin, to get the idea on how to sew it together.

My backpacking dad sewed his first tent from a torn spinnaker a sailing buddy of his was throwing out. (Just as an aside, he sewed the sail for the lateen sail on our modified canoe from a discarded tent.)

Okay, I wouldn't sew a mock-up from muslin, as (1) it doesn't sew anything like canvas or nylon, (2) it stretches way different from canvas or nylon and would not give the right impression when you tried to set it up, and (3) if your first effort is pretty-close-to-right, having it out of pretty-close-to-right fabric would make it useable right away.

Try contacting someone in your town or the nearest larger town who sews awnings, and see if you can buy scraps or bolt ends or mill ends to try out.

I have a good sized chunk of waterproof nylon or whatever. I was pondering the construction of an awning/tent and thought I could make a small one for practice.

I wish I had saved all the poles from the abandoned/trashed tents I have picked up over the years.... :(
