Odd Question. How do you camp in a TD?

I don't have much experience with tear drops, But I grew up camping and have stayed in everything from tents, pop ups, cargo trailers, to fifth wheels. I don't think it matters what your staying in. With bad weather your going to want some kind of awning. With tents and tear drops a easy up seem to work pretty well. For anything larger awnings are pretty standard. If you notice pretty much every travel trailer you see has a factory installed awning.. It just makes life easier.. Sooner or later your going to be camping in wet weather. We also camp in cold weather so staying dry has a whole other level of priority when the days high is 40f lol

We have Kelty Car tarps that attach to Kedar/awning rail mounted on the tear, shoes go in a plastic bin that slides under the tear or comes inside.

one thing folks. we teardroppers are a inventive creative bunch.

if something is bugging us when we camp or doesn' t work we change it and we customize and we invent.

theres only a million diffrent way to camp and no one is the same.

everyone on here is camping in a million diffrent ways.

just like randy. when it didn' t work he cut a hole in the floor!

you realize what a rv dealer would say when you cut a hole in the floor!

thats the neat thing about teardrops and what we build on here that is a standy or a converted u-hual trailer.


your not bound in the limets of a manafactured trailer or rv.

you don't like something about your camping.

you make what works for you.

even if its a hole new trailer.

and a finshed teardrop is okay to rebuild or make changes too!

the common man making something work for himself with out spending a fortune

is a lot about what teardrops are about. even the standys

this hole hobby is about customizing down to a hole new trailer that fits you to a glove for your camping life style.

nearly everyone uses an easy up or something like it. we have a nice plastic tub that slides under the trailer. slip your shoes off and into the tub and slide it in place. shoes are dry in the morning.

EasyUps are nice. I have camped a lot with people that have them but..... They are heavy and a bugger to put up and take down when alone. Some of the sun flies like in the above picture are nice but still adds to the setting up and tearing down and expensive now that I am a "redundant" person. And one that is planning on building another trailer. go figure.

As I camp along I just put my shoes in a reusable grocery bag and keep them by the door. doesn't cramp my style a bit and I know they are safe and won't get dragged away in the night or something.

I purchased a 12x12 Easy Up for $100...plus I have an LLBean 10x10 screen house with rain fly and floor. I only got out twice this year at the end of the season for health reasons, but next year both these items will accompany us on our trips. As somebody already pointed out, a 12x12 easy up will provide rain coverage over the galley and both side doors to keep rain off your mattress. I have always changed to sandals late in the evening as they are easy on/off for middle of the night bathroom runs. I have running boards on my teardrop so I just sit down in the door, slide them off and left them sitting on the running board just outside the door.

I also hung a coat hook outside both doors to hang a wet raincoat on before getting into the camper.

You say you "don't want to deal with an Easy Up canopy." If you are going for any length of time, like my wife and I camp for 2 straight weeks in Acadia National Park every summer, then the time to put up and take down an Easy Up is irrelevant to the usefulness it provides during those 2 weeks. Maybe for one night when it isn't raining then it will get left at home. The screen house will not only protect us from bugs, but also give us a place to dry off the dog (22 pound Schnoodle) before carrying him to the camper.

I have a 10x10 First Up that I can put up by myself in about 15 minutes. Yes, it's a little heavy, but it's not like I am dragging it around all over the campground. I put it over the galley, and I use the sidewalls at night to provide me with a place to change clothes, etc. If rain is predicted, I can roll my tear back under the canopy and get in and out without getting wet.

I don't like messing with tent and easy ups, when the whole purpose of the camper (for me) was to not have to set the stuff up!

So what I do is open the side door and sit down, under the teardrop I have a plastic Wally world bin with a snap top, I pop the top pull my shoes off while they are still outside and put the top back on and slide it under the trailer and flip my feet in. This works fine when it is raining too as long as it is not storming badly. When it is storming badly, I find a friend with an easy up before going home LOL...

Find sumbody that has already hauled an EasyUp to camp and put it up.



As I have a rather smallish TV weight is important to me in more than one way. And I am not about to loose 100 pounds. Though I should and I would like to. And If i ever did it would not be over night.

ATTAGIRL, Susan...I take my easy up and can set it up AND take it down all by myself ! There are little tricks to it, but it's real easy!( Hence , EASY-UP )

As a fellow tent hater, I still like my easy up too. I never set it up unless the weather is looming, but I still do have it for those special times. So maybe that might deserve some secondary consideration? (At least when you're not camping with a group)

I'm surprised that you under-the-tear folks aren't getting raccoons or other critters messing around with your shoes at night. We leave our shoes on the roof or the fenders on dry nights. Raccoons can climb but they don't seem to jump to get into mischief.

On rainy nights we have erect an REI shade alcove over the tear. Its windwalls work great at protecting a 10x10 dry space around a 5x8 trailer even in storm squalls, and can be hung partly open for privacy, air flow, shade. With a cover overhead, there's a dry space on the trailer roof for shoes, extra gear, etc. We also use the trailer tongue as a dry, enclosed storage shelf - the windwall will fit around it.[http://www.tnttt.com/gallery/image.php?image_id=79258][/url]
