I like the WFCO, it's small, easy to install/use and I got mine for ~$100 from AdventureRV.

I dont know anything about the WFCO but people love them.

In a few weeks I'm going to start a build. This is a timely thread.

Can you elaborate on 'computer power supply'?

Thanks,

Tom

WAFCO is Chinese made and I am seeing increasing numbers of complaints on other forums. Those that have used Progressive Dynamics (US made) or have switched to, on the other hand have been happy. My own experience is that once home CR's PD would not come down off boost mode and I called them Tuesday after noon, I had a replacement the next morning. The failure of mine can probably be attributed to wiring being messed up at Eye4Design, one hot leg of the 120 and the 12V ground were grounded to the frame. There are other converters but for the most part more expensive don't work any better.

Most, if not all, computer power supplies have an output of 12 volts DC. Just a few modifications are necessary and if you can't find one for free, you're just not lookin hard enough. They are everywhere and used by hobbyists for numerous applications. Older models are fine. If your DC power needs are limited to situations where you are plugged into AC and only need the power converted, you're set. Keep in mind... total amperage is lower than a specialized unit, all depends on your needs. You probably aren't gonna run an electric blanket, TV, lights and air compressor with it.

I have had mine installed for over a year, no problems. It will power my AM/FM Cassette deck, vent fan, interior lights and galley light simultaneously without problems. The only mod I have made to it post-install was to install a switch-controlled receptacle so I could eliminate the fan noise while I am sleeping.

If you have a battery don't see a need for a converter. A small battery charger will put in over 100 amp/hours over 24 hours and replace all but the biggest draw over time. I can't see a need for a 40 amp converter. Boaters live "off the grid" and use only batteries so why not a teardrop.

One thing I'm considering is using a solar controller with some solar panels (have these on hand) and instead of a battery charger just a simple surplus power supply or other new power supply and run it as the input to the solar controller when the solar panel is not on line. Simple and fewer components but if the solar controller fails you're SOL. Just kicking around the idea.

However, a converter can be had for about the same as a good charger so why not. A converter also has a "load center" with breakers and fuses.

So, consider all the options before jumping on the converter bandwagon.

Cheers,

Gus

when electrical components fail they can lead to fire or electrical shock.. in my opinion, they are not something worth trying to save a few bucks on.. I always buy NEW, top quality products from reputable dealers.. marine quality products are the best bet.. usually they are designed to withstand harsher working environment than home or RV products are and will usually last a lot longer..

If you don't have a battery that has to be charged, and just want to run 12VDC appliances off 120VAC shore power, then any 12VDC power supply that puts out sufficient amperage will be fine.

But if you need to keep a battery charged at the same time, you need a box built for that purpose.

Thanks Guys! I was actually looking for a "Brand Name " and size??
Thus, I can look up the specs, prices, and availability.

If you want specs, you have to tell us your energy budget for the trailer. A low watt unit like my WFCO 8725 would not be suitable for a trailer with electric heating, cooling, and cooking.

Google WFCO Converter and Progressive Dynamics to see if one of their units will fit your budget (monetary and power).

I chose the WFCO based on recommendations on this forum, and the knowledge that my electrical requirements are low. I can run my trailer lights and ventilation for 4 days without exceeding my battery's discharge recommendations.

been camping since the 60's never heard of WAFCO are these the same as WFCO?

I have never had anyone tell me that they had trouble with WFCO convertors I am wondering if you could tell us what troubles they are having so we can be on the lookout.

thanks

A couple of instances where the WFCO started making a loud squeal, one fan failure another unknown which was not the fan, fan running contentiously and one just plain noisy (probably fan related), electronics board failure (quit working) couple of instances.
