12 Votl Wire source

Postby ukuleleblues » Sat Jan 21, 2012 8:47 am

I am goging to wire my trailer for 12 volts using a mixture of 12 v bulbs and LEDs. Any suggestions on what Gage wire, What wire types do you all use, Multi conductor wrapped, In-wall speaker wire, etc. Also where is a good place to get wire, salvage yard, online, etc. Thanks!

I like the following suppliers (links) for a lot of my wiring supplies...

http://www.delcity.net
http://www.waytekwire.com

Of course these are not the only ones...

For wire, ONLY NEW ... Some switches, lamp fixtures and speakers may be repurposed from whatever source they become available from (just avoid junk) ...

Home depot or lowes or most hardware stores. You can go as small as 20 gauge but 18 to 16 will do just fine. Stranded is what I used in mine but solid will work just fine.

You don't want solid wire. I remember reading some where that it does not do well in a trailer because of all the movement it can break. I wish I could remember where it was I read it.

If you are really interested, I suggest looking up AC43.13-1A Chapter 11, and AC43.13-2A. This covers all the aviation standards of wiring, splices allowed, cannon plugs, acceptable repairs, you name it. You can get it here. We use this for Boeing wiring of aircraft. Good enough for a 747 good enough for a trailer. A lot of trailer supply shops have wire. We use a lot 20 and 24 gauge in the 747. If you can go stranded. I used 14 gauge but only because it was free.

Also there is http://www.rowand.net/Shop/Tech/WireCapacityChart.htm which has a nice chart with different gauges and teh amps it can take.

I also use flat 4 trailer light wiring. I split it into two sets of two wires, I use the "groundier" color in each set for the ground, and the other no "groundy color" for power. I'm thinking I use Green, and brown for the ground. This creates a non standard color scheme, guess I should write the wring diagram near the fuse box.
If I could shut my brain off, I could save myself alot of time, money and effort.
