I watched this video yesterday and I don't see how more than two fit.

This model isn't the 'Clamshell' though. On the clam, the galley is outside (which is what I want) and there's a bench seat and I think a closet inside instead of the galley. I guess the idea was to sleep one of the kids on the bench seat and make an upper bunk for the othe boy above the bench. However, I think with the closet there, the bench isn't long enough to sleep on. It seems to me that this idea would require ripping out the bench seat and closet and designing and installing a set of bunks from scratch. Probably totally doable for almost everyone on this forum, but not for me, I don't think.

Are you committed to buying, or would you consider building? I'm in the same boat. I needed to fit in my 10-yo twins and me, AND I need to be able to tow behind my Hyundai Elantra Touring, and I couldn't find a pico-light trailer for 3-4 for less than what my car cost in the first place!!! So I decided to build. So far I have the foamy shell finished, a 5x9 standy on a Harbor Freight (HF) 4x8 trailer. The interior will have benches along the walls (also foam, I'm thinking), and a table will fold down to make a queen-size bed. Over that will be bunks for the twins. The bunks won't be finished for our first camp-out next month, dear daughter and I will camp in the trailer and d son will have to put up a tent and sleep in it like the other Webeloes in his den.

:D

I started my build a year ago, but rebooted and restarted in February this year. Take a look at the builds in the foamy section and see what you think.

Hi Catherine, your trailer sounds awesome, but I homeschool the boys and am effectively 'going back to school' for a 2nd career as a musician and music teacher. I barely have it together to make meals and mow the lawn once every few months. Definitely not going to do build project. I'm trying to find something that sleeps 4, has a FULL galley on the outside, and is already built! Sadly, though, such an animal does not seem to exist.

mike suggested this

this one was made several years back with a double axel

Some folks are using utility trailers which are bigger and everything inside can be removed and used as a trailer too.

there are tents you can get that go on top of a car or truck. google images "car top tent"

there are plans for this type on the net too. free. If you are interested and can not find one I have plans for one like this.

Hi JEvans - I too am new here - I have built a few teardrops and recently we decided to take the plunge and go into business - We currently are only offering the standard 2 person model - But I have been working on designs for something along the lines of what you are looking for. If you would like, you can check out our website - www.lilhut.com - If it sounds like something you would like to explore, my contact info is there.

Good luck on your search

Hi Jess,

I recently bought a Cozy Cruiser Teardrop and was also looking for one for 4. Right now my wife and I have a 3 year old and another boy on the way. I wanted a CampInn Raindrop which has two bunk beds for children under 5 feet, but the cost of it was more than we wanted to pay for a teardrop.

For now since the Cozy Cruiser has a queen size bed, us three can sleep side by side. We also omitted the inside cabinet over the feet area and only have a shelf with can be used as a bunk. So we can sleep three next to each other and the smallest child on the bunk. We know this set up will only work for very small children and they will out grow it pretty fast.

In in long run, we too wanted a way to travel in a teardrop for 4 and be able to travel with minimal setup. I've been searching high and low and this was the best set up I've found without investing in a bigger camper.

Mount a Maggiolina autohouse on top of the teardrop. It's better than mounting on top of your car b/c you don't have to take it down. It has a bed and unlike a tent it's hardshell and superfast to set up.

Good luck on your search if you haven't found it already.

Right, I forgot to look at the date of the post. Hopefully someone else who's looking might benefit from the idea.

Take it from someone who's been there, do not consider a popup tent trailer for a road trip. We did a three week trip in ours and after about two weeks of setting up every night, when you're road weary, and taking it all down again in the morning gets very old.
Great for camping, though

JEvans wrote:Hi all,

I've been on and off this forum for a few years, just lurking and reading. I used to take the whole family camping in my (non-poptop) Vanagon (little twin boys on the floor, husband and I on the bed). Now the boys are 11 and getting bigger every day, we need some kind of trailer for our road trips. I really really want a teardrop, mainly because I adore the idea of an outside galley. Seriously. I want one. As the woman who's job it was to climb the stepladder and load all the camping gear onto the roof rack of our Vanagon, you have no idea how bad I want a simple kitchen that is just all set up for me and that doesn't involve lifting!

To cut to the chase, we now are the proud owners of a new-to-us 2006 Sienna, a v6 with plenty of pulling power for a small trailer. The thing is, all the poptop/tent trailers that sleep 4 have the silly blinkin' galley on the inside! (who wants to cook inside while everyone else is outside having fun?) And all the awesome nifty teardrops with their darling galleys....only sleep 2. Sadness.

So, am I just missing it? Is there something out there that I don't know about? Surely I'm not the only woman with two kids who wants to cook outside and sleep inside? So far, the only working idea I have is a teardrop with a rooftop tent installed. It's a good start, but I'm looking for other ideas.

Oh, just one thing, before you go there...please don't suggest the kids sleep in tents on the ground. That's fine for a long stay, but honey, let me tell you, I do NOT want to have to pull all their gear out and make them pack it up and pack up a tent every morning when we're on a road trip! I need simple and fast setup and takedown, and that means a teardrop or poptop berth for everyone, not just the adults. If I can find the right rig, we're going to take a trip across America this fall as part of the boys' homeschooling program, visit all the national parks, historic sites, etc.

Anyhow, that's my story! Anyone who can offer suggestions or shoot me a link I would sure appreciate it.

Best wishes, Jess Evans

Check out the 4 person we are currently building. our album should have all the build pics so far including the inside. It is 6' across on the inside & will sleep myself, the hubby, our 10 year old & our 6 year old daughters. Galley is in the back.
