Window Clamp Ring screws?

Postby mikeschn » Thu May 03, 2012 6:35 pm

I bought some RV windows for my next weekender build. They came with clamp rings, but no screws. Does anyone know what kind of screws to use?

Here's the type of window I have:

Just # 8 panhead screws, you will have to determine the length once you wall is built so you know the thickness of the wall. My build uses 2" screws
If it ain't broke, fix it till it is

Self-tapping screws make the task much easier.

I have the doors that have the same type rings. I almost herniated myself trying to get the phillips head self tapping screws to tap the groove and have found that lowes metal piercing screws are perfect and have a 1/4" hex head which makes much easier driving into the groove. Also the rings for the doors are set for 3/4" walls or flipped around is 1 1/4" My wall depth is 1 1/16 to 1 1/8 and the 3/4" side won't work at all as the ring won't seat on the wall. I flip it and get matching screen door trim for my interior and use it in the middle of the areas of the four sides to support the ring from collapsing and it works great that way with #8 1 1/2" piercing screws. Hope this helps and I've done 5 of these doors so far and promise thses screws are much easier than the self tapping ones.

My windows came the same way. I used self tapping screws and a cordless drill/bit driver. The screws went right in with no problems. My doors were slightly thinner than the widnows were set up for. Made a spacer out of some scrap 1/4" to fill the gap all the way around. Unless you look for it the spacer is not noticable.

I just installed the same widows a week ago and they went in very easy. I believe I used a #8 also.

Thanks for the info guys. #8 is what I'll try. It looks like there a couple different options to try!

John,
How wide are your walls? I will be installing my windows next week in 1-1/4" walls and it looks like my windows may need shims also. :NC
thanks,
James

Here's a dumb question...

I'm installing some used windows that didn't come with screws. Thanks for the info on the correct type of screws.

163937

My question is: Do the screws just grab the side of the groove/channel, or do they penetrate the groove for extra holding power? The groove is so shallow that I can't imagine that option 'A' above is correct, but I thought I'd check to be sure.

If 'B' is the correct option, I'm guessing that it would be helpful to line up the trim ring and window on a work bench and drill pilot holes???

Thanks for any tips...

My window screws just grip the sides of the groove, like option A.
