Gotta load some furniture into the CT my Mom wants my Daughter to have so will transport same to Napa for my Daughter. Got the furniture loaded today. Will head for Napa California on Tuesday to visit Christi's folks, sisters, my daughter, and many of my childhood friends I grew up with. Old times are not forgotten. :applause:

I need to add a pair of air shocks to the Jeep. ;)

BC,

That's in the works. The wife's 94 T-Bird cracked a head so it is pretty much dead and not worth repairing. We've been talking about replacing it with a Ford F250 pickup (extended cab version) then likely sell the Jeep Cherokee.

We left Tahoe today because a snow storm is scheduled to hit Tahoe tomorrow so we got while the getting was good (was not at all looking forward to going over the HYW 50 pass through the Sierras in snow). We're now in Napa, California. I unloaded all the junk we hauled here in the back of the Jeep and the CT and it sits a bit more level now. Still, with all the weight we were hauling a couple of the passes taxed the Jeep. I couldn't imagine trying to haul our 165 Jayco TT this distance with the Jeep. Every driver behind us going over the passes would be cursing us to no end for holding them up and I'd likely end up with one of these. :BE

Given your Sig, I thought you'd enjoy this bit of Warren Zevon, circa 1966...

EG,

WOW! Thanks for that. I am indeed a HUGE Warren fan but had no idea of his earliest recording history (I didn't become a Warren fan until my late 30's). I knew his music before that but just wasn't a big fan (too stupidly wrapped up in Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones). I am also a huge fan of Bruce Cockburn. Bruce and Warren are significantly different but then again they are not. Both are incredible writers and musicians. I can listen to either for hours on end, and have.

Johnnie,

Thank you so much for the well wishes and thoughts. We made it through the first leg of our journey, now only need to survive a full week with family and friends :R ;) and then hopefully return home to Boise to survive this encounter. :frightened:

We have returned from our 10 day trip to California.

This was the longest and greatest length trip we have made hauling our CT conversion. We learned a lot on this trip and will make modifications accordingly. Number one lesson learned is we need more secured storage space. We left Boise figuring we could pile stuff on the bunk beds. Not a good idea. It all bounced out and was all over the floor of the CT by the first rest stop. We need some sort of cargo net to hold things in place if we want to use the beds as a storage area, otherwise it ends up on the floor of the CT.

Our galley worked as planned. The Sears dorm reefer was more than adequate. I froze a bunch or water in its freezer and that was more than adequate to keep the entire reefer cool as we traveled i.e., no power to the reefer. The microwave was a blessing. Fire up the Honda EU2000i gen and we were good to go. Same with the little no name resistance built in fan heater we had with us, which worked great as long as the gen was running, in fact it got the CT inside too hot and we had to shut it down. It's a tiny thing and I am amazed at how well it heats the insulated CT, until the gen runs out of gas, that is. We spent last night again in the Winnemucca Wal-Mart parking lot with the gen and little heater going. All was fine until the gen ran out of gas at 3:00 in the morning. Things got cold rapidly after that. Spring in Winnemucca can be very cold at night. By 6:00 am we were shivering so I had to get up and hike a mile to the local Chevron station to fill up our 2 gal. gas can. Got the gen back up and running by 6:30 and by 7:00 we were as warm as toast. We heated our breakfast in the microwave along with water to wash our faces/birdbath and brush our teeth. We took our time and relaxed to enjoy the morning in Winnemucca then headed for Boise and home. The pic attached is coming back into the Boise Valley after going over the Owyhee Mountains pass, a beautiful sight for we who live in the valley and are returning home.

What we didn't do was make a checklist of what we needed for this trip. Our CT had been sitting idle for too long and we made the assumption that everything was in there that we would need. It wasn't so we had to make due without a number of things we thought we had.

A small porta potty isn't good for 10 days. We rarely used it on previous trips, more of an emergency thing, so never gave much thought to it and its capacity. Mistake! It is full. :NC

All in all the CT was a blessing to have along. No matter where we were we had a home. Even though we stayed most of the time with family it was nice to have as a refuge, our home away from home. If we needed to stop for a restroom break while on the road the CT had us covered. If we didn't want to go the distance we had a place to stay. We could pull over at any safe roadside spot and take a break, cook some food, or just relax out of the traffic. Our little 6x10 Ct is, arguably, one of the best investments we have made.

We still have a lot of work to do to finish it, and this trip has given us the needed enthusiasm and additional ideas to get it finished, or at least further along the way to getting it finished. We are thankful that we found this forum that has provided us with so many great ideas about converting a CT to a multiple use, and thankful to all of the fine folks here who have given us so many great ideas and insight.

Don & Christi,

um... a tip I found we have to adhere to:
I keep a 5gallon bucket under the bed just in case of Portapotty getting full before I can discharge it.
I've really enjoyed our dorm fridge. We also freeze those lunch bag ice pouches ... they do come in handy.

I've gotten three cargo nets from Northern Tool store to use in the camper.. but so far... I've not needed them on local lake camping trips.
That may change end of this month when we have a week long trip to Edisto Beach SC planned.

Jeff,

Thank you for the encouragement. I often wonder if I am posting too much or too little, or simply insignificant information, but I post anyway hoping someone might find our experience useful. I am truly pleased to know it is not falling on deaf ears.

Again, thank you for that.

Wolfscout,

Thanks for the five gallon bucket tip. Light and easy to stow away.

I have bought stuff from Northern Tool before and received good service from them. I'll check them for cargo nets.

If anyone is wondering, though I suspect few are, I am back in Lake Tahoe, NV tending to my 87 year old mom who took a tumble 2 days after we left her just two weeks ago. Thankfully there is nothing broken but she has a pair of black eyes and is in the hospital. I hope to bring her back to her home late next week and will tend her until she makes recovery. She doesn't move around as well as she used to so I am here to make mods to her house to meet her needs. Needless to say, once again, that we making no progress on our 6x10 CT conversion but what can I say, mom comes first. :NC She sacrficed a lot to raise me proper so I will gladly sacrifice to see her comfortable, as best I can, in her aging years.

I also enjoyed reading your thread on your CT conversion. Someday, I'd like to do something like this... but I am in the midst of converting my Sportster to a cafe racer which is taking way longer than expected. Please keep posting your updates

GPW,

Thank you for that. I try.

Mom is doing better than I expected and I hope to be back home in another week or two to get back to my CT conversion. When I get back to Boise I am going to go "Hell bent for leather" to make some real progress. 8)

Sportxlh,

Thank you for the kind words of encouragement. I hope to be back to my conversion soon. In the mean time I would love to see/read more about the Sportster to cafe conversion. Do you have a web site or a photo album where I can look at photos/details? I have an 86 XL I bought new in 86 and have been riding it all these years. I rode it to work for a couple of decades, taken trips from Boise to Yosemite, Napa, CA, drag raced it at Firebird Raceway outside of Boise (12:52 @108mph), and rode to the Bonneville Salt Flats to spectate. I love cafe bikes and my Sportster is due for some updates. My first "real" bike was a Yamaha RD 350 I converted to cafe racer, actually rode it to Laguna Seca from Napa, CA. back in 78 to watch the road races. Kenny Roberts was the star and my idol back then. It was an incredible experience to watch him, a moto star in action. He truly changed road racing style back then with his hang off technique.
