Just bought another lantern off Ebay - I'm told it is a 243A. The date code on the bottom is "0"---"9", which I am advised may be September 1940.
It has a badly peeling red paint, honestly chips come every time you pick-it up, with patches of blue showing from underneath. What to do? Leave it as-is(?), try to get the red paint off while preserving some of the original blue(?), take it down to bare metal and hope I can repaint it better (how does one do this?).
Currently, on the shelf next to the others. Nice little lantern, although a little beat-up.

My son who is 18 and independent about 30 % of the time told me tonight that he is done with propane and want to take a white gas Coleman on an all night fishing trip. So we went through the drill on white gas and he says to me why didnt I do this sooner? Sometimes there is peace in the universe. Ommmm. Ommmmm.
All joking aside I knew he would come around.![]()

Very nice and a good price for E-bayStrip it down and repaint the blue as best you can,Anything should look better than that red then order a replacement Mica globe from Fred Kunts.I use Kleen strip paint stripper works faster than anything I have found,Clean it real good steel wool it off and repaint a dark blue.
