I need some stenciling advice

Postby Forrest747 » Wed Jun 20, 2012 11:20 pm

I need some stenciling advice. I have a 12 inch wide black stripe on my trailer that I want to look like diamond plating. I bought a stencil and need some advice on how to do it. YT had several videos that say to lightly coat the brush and them tap it on. So when I go to move the stencil then what no one is showing that. Do I wait for it dry 12 minutes what do I do? I want this to look halfway decent not like the cave drawings I normally do.

I have used the stencil when airbrushing and seen it used. You have to be steady handed and lift straight up. Do some dry runs first. Good luck,

You can find vinyl decal stuff online that looks like diamond plate. That might be the way to go.

Here's some listed on eBay.

I had a weekend job in a stencil store and used to do demos, so here's my 5c worth!

1). You absolutley dont want the paint to creep under the stencil, or you will bet a blotchy pattern rather than a crisp one. So get a can of aerosol adhesive, as used in art studios (spraymount in the uk). Give the reverse of the stencil a light spray, then it will hold in position without any edge lift.

2) You need a special stencil brush. They're not too expensive and make all the difference. eg http://www.dickblick.com/products/blick-economy-white-bristle-stencil-brush/

3) Put a small amount of your paint into a shallow tray. Dab the brush in, then work off most of it on a sheet of old newspaper. Now do a quick light repetative dabbing motion through the stencil. You dont aim to build up the colour with one stroke, but rather by keep going over the same bit.

4) I would then gently peel off the stencil while tacky, and only reposition it further down the tear when dry.

Hope this is of some help. ;)

Someone here at work who is crafty said i should see if the stencil has registration marks and first lay out a "grid" using painters tape that the registration marks penciled on. easy to lift off and dont have to erase the pencil marks. she also suggested once that is done i can do every other mark, wait for it to dry then go back and fill in the gaps. i like the adhesive idea, i assume i will have to clean some of it off each time and off teh painted surface. thanks for the advice. go light and build up with another brush im sure the wife will love that i am buying another tool.
