5x8 to a 5x10

Postby afzski » Tue Sep 04, 2012 11:20 pm

I'm looking at the 5x8 NT Trailer - but need a 5x10 for my plan -- I think slicing the frame in front of the wheels and extend from there -- would that work in your opinions???

You can build a 10' trailer on a 8' frame without cutting it in 1/2. You can let it overhang.

I built the "barn" on a 5 x 8 Namco cargo and simply extended and reinforced the tongue and cantilevered the body 2 foot forward making the body 5 x 10. If you trailer has the single tongue do yourself a favor and replace it with a full length section of 2x2 or 2x3 steel structural tube. The factory single tongues only extend to the second crossmember and it will bend over time from load and impact. Even some of the vee tongues are a bit anemic. if you step on it and it flexes I would be a bit concerned. An on the road tongue failure is a hugh pain in the butt and not easily or quickly repaired.

Here is a link to tons of pics of the barn build......http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=30307

you can move it forward a foot and let it overhang a foot or you can even let it overhang the 2 feet. if the floor is solid and teh walls tied to it properly you will be fine. make sure you have a good tongue on your trailer its a must.

Maybe he's building a 12'+ trailer and needs a 10' frame.

Personally, I would extend the back - and push the axle back if it screws up the balance. Less alignment issues I would think.

I haven't looked at that trailer but if you can extend the tongue and overhang the front you kill 2 birds with one stone, fitting the trailer on the frame and moving the axle back (if that's a plus for you).

I am building a 9'-6" on a 8' trailer frame. I extended the tongue and went 1' out over the front and 6" over the rear.
