Are You Ready For Sandy

Postby Shadow Catcher » Fri Oct 26, 2012 8:29 pm

Some one with a disabled 33' motor home was asking on IRV2 about how well it might survive Sandy. The comments ran from "if it runs, run" to "if it does not run have it towed" and My favorite "if you decide to ride it out make sure you store your will and vital papers some place else.

From what I understand this may well be the perfect storm, FEMA has been activated and put in place. They anticipate lots of wind damage flooding... :rainy:
I am anticipating heavy rain even here in NW Ohio but will offer a place for anyone needing a place to stay or park your teardrop.

I have family along the Maine coast, along the Virginia coast, and in Ohio. Nobody is too worried. I hope they're right. Weathermen do tend to sensationalize.... :NC

They get more melodramatic with each storm these days. Living in coastal NC we've heard the doomsday forecast so many times I can't count that high. Hope everyone is spared and it is a nonevent.

From what I have been seeing they should be worried!

Here in the Philadelphia, PA. area what ever is going to happen is going to happen Monday night.

And I do agree that a lot of Weathermen should get awards for there Dramatic performances.

That said all I look at is how much rain will or has fallen.

The only real thing I do to prepare is fill my freezer with milk jugs full of water and make a lot of Ice.

If the power does go out your Refrigorator will keep for a few days. (anything longer than a few days...Punt!)

Yes, it can be used as an Ice Chest.

As far as everything else, Batteries, lights, a radio, a cook stove, fuel, alternate heat, canned food etc.....

Hey, I'm a Camper, I got it covered!

BUT!

On a more positive note. Theres a woman I have dated a few times who does live in an area that is known for flooding.

She's spending the night at my place Monday Night.......Film at 11.

Happy Trails

From experience , one thing to remember is something to keep your mind busy doing positive thoughts .... It’s not like camping , that’s FUN... This is like camping with the added STRESS of survival :o (plus the media feeding you all the Tragedy) .... A variety of Distractions keep you from being depressed .... Give my wife a flashlight and a book of crossword puzzles , and she’s happy for days ... Just saying ... Keep your mind/attitude/head right and you can make clear , rational decisions should you need to ...

While it can be hard to prepare for physical damage/effects of a big storm, it is very easy to be prepared with respect to food-water-light-heat, etc.
Your unprepared neighbors may be stressed out to the point of hair pulling panic when the utilities go out, and they realize they don't have basic things like water and toilet paper.
If you know it is coming, why not be prepared...it isn't like these items will spoil or never be used...

Times have changed since your great grandparents would have been called crazy for not being prepared for a simple thing like having enough food for the winter, now, because we are all so accustomed to daily food deliveries to the grocery store, we are called crazy if we have enough sense to stock up a little in case the food delivery or food storage system fails or is interrupted by an event like a storm...

Good luck to all who may be affected.

The one thing that I will go crazy without, is a book. Since I live in a place that can and has been cut off by various weather related disasters, I buy flood books. Flood books should be interesting and thick. They are put out of the way and NOT read until disaster strikes.

Yup, I can sit in front of the woodstove, and read during power outages. It don't get much better.

Good luck to all you NE folks. I hope it is being overhyped and that all will be well. Take care of yourselves, and your neighbors.
Oh, and make sure you have ground up coffee!

Well, I'm right in the path and on the bad side at that! I live so far South and East in Ct. that I could drive a golf ball into R.I., and on a tidal river to boot! Lots of activity at the boat launch right outside my window.
As far as prep, I hope my biggest worry is power outages. I have city water that has never been a problem and city gas that has always worked. I have 2 Coleman lanterns and 2 good kerosene lanterns, as well as my Coleman stove and fuel if it comes to that. Unfortunately my outgoing sewage relies on power, so I'll be peeing and dumping any other H2O outside.
During Irene a year ago I estimate I had about 6' left before the river was at my threshold, but my cellar and furnace would have been toast by then. We'll see....

 A lot of folks around here used to ignore the weather drama. We seriously get tornado warnings all year long and some got used to it....never again! I sure hope this is a no blow but also hope folks are prepared. Blow up boats and lots of TP... ;)

Hope that none of the drama reaches Indianapolis! I live on the river that runs thru Indy, and sometimes I live IN the river - when it rains too much and the river floods. Which is why my house is built 4 feet off the ground! But I'm taking Gertrude and heading out on Monday. The house (and the cat) will be in the care of a friend, who has no idea what to do in case of a flood! Guess I'll just keep a look at the flood maps and let her know if it's getting to the danger point, so that she can evacuate. Sure hope it doesn't come to that!! :worship:

Here, just north of Los Angeles, we just don't have severe weather. Even a "record" rainstorm is nothing compared to a summer afternoon thunderstorm in Pensacola, Florida. The pictures and videos on the news of the east coast storms are quite impressive.

What we do have here is inadequate drainage, soil that tends to slip away when saturated causing devastating landslides (if you fly around you can see many hills with huge escarpments and the whole side of the hill missing), and people that don't know how to drive in the rain or build in locations that are safe (everyone wants a view or to be near the ocean).

Opps, almost forgot to mention. We have earthquakes. However the news media doesn't have much to do in the time leading up to an earthquake because there is no really good way to predict em (but the Italians just sentenced some of their earthquake scientists to 7 years in prison because they didn't predict and warn that there was going to be an earthquake). So, earthquakes sneak up on you with no warning, startle you with sudden violent shaking, shake you to your knees (which is one of the more minor consequences), and suggest that the end of the world has arrived as the very foundation of your life isn't stable. The good news is that they last only a few seconds to a few minutes but that can be more than long enough to wreck havoc.

I'm not sure which type of disaster is better. If I were on the east coast, I think I'd take a "vacation" and head for higher inland ground. Most folks won't so the hinterlands won't be too crowded. One trick I've learned here in earthquake country is that in the first couple of minutes after a earthquake, you can still make phone calls. Most people take a few minutes to gather their wits and then try to call out but, by then, the networks are overloaded. I phoning someone outside the area to let the know you're ok (and the should have a list to call others you'd like to notify) if your first priority (aside from keeping yourself and others safe), you have a good chance of completing your call before the networks get overloaded.

Good luck to everyone and as we say: "Keep your head down".

Gus
