Romex clamp

Postby Rolly » Mon Oct 15, 2012 8:06 pm

I am installing a new breaker panel in my 1971 trailer. Can I safely put 2 romex cables through a romex clamp/ strain relief?

By code, Nope. Would it be safe, up to you. Can you make a new hole and use a 2 pice clamp?

Yes, I do purchasing for an electrical contractor the following are NEC compliant for multiple cables,I am sure other manufacturers romex connectors are made to handle multiple cables also.

Bridgeport #566-DC2 suitable for use with (1) 14/2 to 10/3 NM-B cable or (2) # 14/2 or 12/2 NM-B cables.

Didn't know that it either. That is the first thing that and inspector looks for in a new house. After you fell one or two inspection because of it you don't do it anymore.

The Arlington black buttons are made in 1/2" + 3/4" trade size and handle a wide variety of cable sizes, either single cables or multiple cables of different sizes. Just leave a copy of the spec sheet with your panel, your local inspector will get the word around. They are perfectly legal and designed for the purpose.

I think in a trailer I would prefer the clamp style like the metal Bridgeport, but in a house where the panel is not bouncing all over the Arlington product is quick, inexpensive, and easy.

Thanks for the info cpinetree. the Bridgeport looks like a 1part# solution for a lot applications. Now to find them in less than 100 quantities.

Graybar http://www.graybar.com/ in my area handles Bridgeport fittings.
Most any electrical supply house near you will will sell over the counter to homeowners (most all break boxes / sell individual units). If not call your local electrician or go by their shop, they will likely give you a few.

Don't get hung up on the specific manufacturer, most every one I have ever seen is approved for 1 or 2 14/2 or 12/2 romex cables. If you are using a different combination of wire, such as a 14/3 with a 14/2 then check the manufacturers website for the specs.

if 1-2 is all you need you can get them at the big Orange store or you could find a service truck of a Electrical shop he will give you some most of the time.

Have you ever used the Bridgeport 556s? They have nice specs but they don't look like a good idea for mobile application to me.

Not sure what the 556 is. Maybe you mean the 565-DC2? If so i think they would be fine in a trailer.

I owe you an apology. When a person "In the trade" takes time to share their knowledge and experiance they should not get a snippy response like i gave.
In my defense, I cornered a box of 566-DC2 clamps grabbed some NOS 12/2 romex, started to install it and discovered the insulation on the black and white wire rubbed on the clamp. I was worried about vibration rubbing through the insulation. Then to my regret i posted my snippy response. Later I tried some more current romex and the sheath went clear through the clamp, no problem. See the picture below

I have just under a hundred 566-DC2 s left over.
