iPad apps

I am learning how to use the new iPad and trying to figure out which apps to load. Did a search on IRV2 and quite frankly really wonder about...
Let me put it this way, the circus had a midget human cannon ball, and when he retired they had a great deal of trouble finding a man of his caliber. The caliber of many on IRV2 is about BB sized.
I did find one app that shows the night sky for star gazing.
So what apps must I have other than Angry Birds?

I really like the TripAdvisor and foodfinder. I also add my subscriptions to the Newsstand, that way I can read if I'm camping and feel like it. I added Truckster so I could find rest areas, etc.

Gas buddy. Find the cheapest gas for your location. Simple to use. And free.

Allstays gives you locations of camp sites and prices as well as location of furl etc. it does cost but well worth it.

While I do not use Apple, my wife does. Bejeweled 2 (an addictive time suck), Found HD and Bon Voyage (remember the search games in the Highlights for Children?), of course the Kindle app, Google maps (the apple version is, shall we say "under negative outlet pressure"..) There are note taking programs which will take your finger-written notes and convert them to text, then let you add drawings on the same page- I use an android version for brain storming, or in my case, synapse sprinkles.

Swifter if you want to look at sites that use flash.

It really depends on what direction you would like to go, and whether or not your ipad is wifi only or hooks into the cell phone system.

i have an app from RIDGID on my tablet which turns the whole thing into a 3-axis bubble level which also lets you line things up using the camera.

I only have an iPod Touch, but the IOS is pretty much the same.

The Weather Channel's app worked pretty well (they did an upgrade and my version of IOS doesn't cut the mustard anymore)
Kindle reader app. There are free books available for the kindle. Check out http://www.baen.com if you're into science fiction, they have a large free library (as well as offer other books) from most of their authors' collections. Also check out www.pixelofink.com for free and bargain kindle format books. Note, their 'daily' email is more like twice daily, but they do offer free books of all genres.
I listen to audio books 'all the time' on the Audible App (note, purchase of books is required)
Oovoo has a decent app for video chat (if you have young people to chat with... (we use it with our college age kid))

Puffin is a safari alternate browser for flash sites. I like Reminders as a checklist program. My husband is addicted to the spider solitaire game. Keeper is a nice program to safely store all your passwords, but there is a cost. If your new years resolution involves weight loss or fitness, i love Lose It! The coolest thing is the bar code scanner to get calories and other nutritional info like carb counts if you are diabetic. Get Running. Is great for getting started on a running program. It tells you when to walk and when to run, slowly increasing the running and tracks your progress. I also use Adobe Reader and Good Reader to read and store word documents and pdfs. You can take notes directly onthe documents. I also have Dropbox to access from the "cloud" files from home anywhere.

One of my favorite apps is a countdown timer. You set it for what ever event you are waiting for and see how many days left. Right now mine is set for retirement, 2months 23 days 1 hour and 40 minutes.

I used that one before I retired. It now shows it's been 23 months 5 days 9 hours 4 minues since I retired My how time flies when you're having fun (Sorry....but you will enjoy it!!!)

If you do not already have one, you need to get an iTunes account. You can then download your apps from the Apps Store on iTunes. I use the Android version of the level, but I saw it in the iPad Apps Store.

I mistakenly said Ryobi instead of RIDGID (same big box store). The iSwifter app is also available there.

One thing to be aware of is the propensity of Apple to approach apps and their devices as though they still own them. My wife has had several instances where apps have disappeared or been changed because Apple has changed their attitude about a vendor or decided that a feature supplied by the vendor is going to compete with a feature in a forthcoming upgrade. That said, Apple has made some really cool stuff, elegant design and well thought out user interface.
