New Contest! Who's in control?

Postby Steve Frederick » Sat Jan 13, 2007 4:27 pm

Well, we've heard from all of those out of control shop owners!:applause:

There have to be folks working in very tight, but organized shops!

I'm in need of some focus, so, I'm offering a copy of my Builder's Manual to the owner of the most organized shop, or a nice organizational trick!

The contest will end February 4th. I will be the judge, and reserve the right to steal any ideas for use in my shop! :?
Rules:
Post a couple of pics of your shop, or a sketch of a neat organizational trick here in this thread. Pic should be your shop, sketches are of something you are using.
If you already own a CD, you'll have another one to give away!!
I know you're out there! I've seen some shots of nice clamp racks and such..
Have Fun!

I'm pretty much out of this one, there is no place to clean mine up to. When you try to have a wood shop, weld shop, auto garage and any other thing you can think of all at the same time tends to make for a perpetual mess. Particularly in a 20x30' building.
I haven't learned to organize in 46 years I doubt it's gonna happen now.

Well...I can't win on clean...but organizationally, I can do a lot of stuff in a very small space. About 5 years ago, my wife bought me a Shopsmith at a local garage sale. She knew I loved woodworking, but up to that point, I had a motley collection hand saws, 20 year old B&D drills and jig saws, sanders, and a bunch of bench top Sears specials. My crowning glories in woodworking mostly involved refinishing old stuff we accumulated.

The Shopsmith, organizationally, inspired me and let me really pick up a hobby. Yeah...I know...it's not like you have a 1500 sq. ft. shop loaded with top of line stationary machines....and you fuss a lot setting it up for accuracy, but I'm pretty happy given I work in a garage. With the attachments, in a 3x6 space...I have a table saw, a 36 inch lathe, a drill press, a 4 inch jointer, a 12 inch planer, strip sander, 6 inch belt sander, a disk sander, band saw, mortice and tendon attachments, etc. The only other things I use frequently are a chop saw and a large stand-alone router table. One nice thing...replacement parts are readily available from the smallest washer to the critical widget.

Nitetimes... Boy, I'll have to second that! Even with three buildings I never have enough space. I did finally got the welding and metalworking away from the woodworking shop. I came close to burning the whole thing down once... That prompted some changes. But, I could never become a neat person... And, certainly not after 60 years. It just ain't happening. :(

A side note: I did have a worker offer to help me "clean up the shop." I think he really must have said "clean out the shop?" When I finally caught on to him he had hocked over $4000. worth of my tools at the local pawn shop! His trial comes up in March. Really a stupid fool: he had to show ID, sign, thumbprint and they took his picture for all 27 items he hocked! :o

Hate to hear that, if someone ripped off my tools I'm afraid I'd have do some serious damage to....
Glad they got the bum, don't let him off easy.
