Exterior Door Hinge

Postby planovet » Wed Jul 02, 2008 6:31 pm

As anyone used this hinge for their doors from mcmaster.com for $9.72 each?

I checked the ones at Austin Hardware and they want $47.07 EACH for them. I know several here have used them but that is a bit pricey even for me.

I was thinking of a hinge like that, but went, once again, with piano hinge. I wasn't sure the 1.75" framing on door and frame would be enough to hold the weight of the door with just 4 screws...

Nice find. I was having a tough time swallowing the Austin price.

I'm looking at doing a second door for one side to accommodate a window ac unit during hot months.

$47.07

I bought the same hinges from them 2 years ago for like 10 bucks.
I guess they found out how popular they are and are getting greedy.

I'm going to consider the McMasters hinge (and as someone in a later post suggested... a marine repair shop) for my hinges. I like the style; but when a pair of hinges costs more than the windows for the door.... even I draw the line somewhere!!!

I've found with Austin Hardware it is best to call them with your order. I have usually gotten better prices talking to them on the phone. Also when on the phone they can tell you what warehouse they are in so you can consolidate orders from one warehouse.
They have 4 warehouses around the country and if each one of the parts you order are in 4 different warehouse's you will get 4 shipping charges.

The pins would have to face up when mounted to the wall of the TD or down when mounted to the door of the TD... Otherwise the door will fall off when you open it ;)

DUH!!!!! After I hit the "submit" button, I realized I answered my own question. If I mount one pin up and one pin down.... without a screwdriver the door won't fall off and it can't be lifted off!! Mounted to the wall, bottom one up and the top one down.

Yea but maybe sometime you will WANT to lift it off. Mount them both up and you will have that option.

Why would you use a hinge that anyone with a screw driver can take off so they can steal your stuff? Am I missing something here?

THanks!

If they want to get into it they will. I doubt if it matters what kind of hinge you have.
