The Lagniappe begins

Postby lauriandgary » Mon Feb 23, 2009 10:34 pm

Have finally gotten around to post some pics of the progress on the restoration of our 1955 Westerner canned ham. We call it "The Lagniappe" which means a little something extra. The 1st posting was "$2 investment."

Here's the before and after of the stove and cabinet which was removed. We plan to build a porta potty closet in this are.

Here's the before and after of the front wall which has sustained water damage.

The porta potty cabinet will intrude into the dinette by about 7 inches deep and 3 inches wide.

Also did some paint stripping on the exterior.

So just to clarify, you are going to keep the stove there, and build a porta potty closet correct?

In my trailer, I have a full stove+oven, with a porta potty that slides out from a cabinet underneath for use during the night.

Happy Mardi Gras!! :P

Thanks all.

We don't plan on putting the stove back. We have a portable Coleman stove that we can use either inside or out. We want the privacy that a closet provides for the porta-potty. :poop:

We plan on the 1st camping trip in April.

Doug,

The stove seems to be in very good condition. It cleaned up well and seems that it was not used often. I haven't done a detailed cleaning or have I hooked it up to see if it works. The only thing missing was a knob. (did not include the other 2 in the picture.

The stove is sitting on the dinette table. The only damage is near the window edge due to the sun. We plan on using it as is.

Update on progress thus far:

We used Aircraft paint stripper to remove almost all of the paint on the exterior siding. Our plan is to only paint a small section near the bottom red (Rustoleum Safety Red) and polish the aluminum to a shiny mirror finish.

Here's the streetside view, it really shows the profile of a "classic canned ham"

Image

Also removed & replaced the rotten flooring under the rear bed. That's where the water tank was and over the years, it leaked and did damage to the wood around it. This view taken thru the rear window.

This view taken from the front of the tailer.

Image

I also added a piece of plywood to the area where the stove cabinet had been. This will be part of the new closet that will be our toilet area.

Image

Next on the list is the front wall area, need to replace the damaged flooring and the framing along the wall edges (both sides). This picture shows what I removed from the flooring, but doesn't really show the damage done to the framing at the wall edges that meet the flooring.

welcome

Postby John T. Hodgen » Mon Mar 16, 2009 8:49 pm

Hey L&G,
Welcome to the forum. Sunset huh? I grew up in Lafayette, graduated from Starks(by Vinton) and worked out of Morgan City for 30 yrs. The thing about Sunset-a family member of mine use to be the preacher at the Baptist church there, his name was Alvin Tomlinson. He was the minister there a couple of different times. Now I live in the mountains of West Virginia, it amazes me when it FLOODS in the mountains-I always thought IT went downhill. About to finish up a h/b 4x8 woody. I do have a pound of Community Coffee in reserve for my T/d maiden voyage lol. Nice canned ham you got going there. Good luck with your build, looking forward for the finished pics. John T. 8)
