Texas Stadium implosion

Postby planovet » Mon Apr 12, 2010 9:11 am

On Sunday morning an era came to a crashing end. It may have not been big news outside of the Texas area but it was big news here. They imploded Texas Stadium after 39 years of use. As some of you know, I'm a reserve police officer in Irving in whose city limits Texas Stadium stood. I had a front row seat for the implosion as I tried to restrain thousands of people (some intoxicated) that wanted to view the implosion. It's not every day that a major sporting venue goes down so it was quite impressive.

Here is a picture I took of the stadium minutes before it went down:

road south of Texas Stadium Sunday morning after it was imploded. Myers, who was slightly inebriated,
was born on February 1971 and has been in Irving all his life. Photo taken Sunday April 11, 2010.

(I like the chants at the end of that one)

BTW, that stadium was an absolutely horrible place to watch a football game. It's a good think the taxpayers of Arlington paid to build gazillionaire Jerry Jones a new stadium to make more money with.

Your 3000th post, and you share it with a picture of an inebriated Cowboy fan. You are so giving.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

How come Steve is pointing one way and you're pointing the other?

Ah, but Arne, nothing matches the showmanship of the Dunes implosion in Vegas.

Treasure Island had it's grand opening at the same exact time as the implosion of the Dunes. It started with a big fireworks show. Then, the tall ship in front of treasure island fired it's canons at the Dunes. Thousands of gallons of jet fuel exploded, turning the Dunes tower into a fireball, and the big sign fell on the casino. Then came the actual implosion and collapse.

Steve was the drunk one, I was the sober one  Actually I was pointing to where he should take his drunk a$$. He was pointing at the line of cars that was going to run over him if he didn't get out of the roadway.

He was very multitasking, holding 2 beers with one hand so he could direct traffic with the other. To be honest, I had been up for 24+ hours and I could have used those two beers.

Thanks for posting that Mark. I was thinking it would be a cool teardrop gathering when my sister said she was going to campout, then I saw the site that said $25 and no RVs. I think I'll drive be there this week to see it now.

39 years seems like such a short lifespan for something like a Pro Sports stadium! Dodger Stadium is 53 years old, the Coliseum in Los Angeles is over 70 years old.

Must not have been enough of those "Box Seats" for the rich and famous...

You nailed it. There wasn't, and there was not a way to add more.

That, and Cowgirls owner Jerry Jones wanted to build a stadium so grand, it would be his legacy. Jerry is known to have just a bit of an ego.

Texas Stadium

Postby Evil Skippy » Fri Apr 16, 2010 3:18 am

I was there when Texas Stadium opened, but I moved on with the Cowboys. I toured the new stadium before opening and then attended the first game in the new home of Americas Team. Go Cowboys!
