Jeff's Cargo conversion

Postby Taco Jeff » Wed Feb 08, 2012 7:01 am

I have a hard time posting pictures on this forum, but I would like everyone to see some of my ideas.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks.
Jeff

Hi Jeff:

I have been following your conversion over on the Expedition Portal forum since you started. It would be nice to see you mirror and document your build here also.

Once my CT conversion gets started (very soon), I will be posting simultaneously over on the Expedition Portal forum also.

You know, I must be an idiot. I post on about six different forums and never have any problems adding photos. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong here. Believe me, I love this forum and would never direct anyone away for any reason. I have been lurking here for quite some time and have stolen, I mean used or should I say borrowed a lot of ideas from here.

I removed the short leaf springs, hangars and the 4" drop axel.
What you are seeing here is a Redneck 3500 lb axel with brakes. All new hangars, shackles, Tacoma leaf springs.
The reason for the adaptor is that the wheels I am using match my 2010 Tacoma. These wheels are hub centric.

I then installed 12" fenders from Sierra 4X4 trailers. I then built what I call wings or steps to prevent a tree or rock from removing my fenders.
They are 1 1/2" tubing with 1/8" tread plate. As you will se as this progresses, these wings actually serve several functions.

I purchased one of the new fiberglass propane tanks but could not find a tank holder I liked.
The base plate is bolted to the A frame, the rack is tig welded and bolted to the body of the trailer.
Also removed the tow ball hitch and installed a piece of 2 1/2" seamless tubing.
Image

This holds a Max Coupler. Also pulled the original tongue mounted jack and installed a fold up jack that is much taller.
If you haven't guessed by now, I doubt this trailer will ever be seen in a campground.

This is a mock up of the galley in the rear.
Image
I need to show this so the rear door mod will make sense.
There will be upper cabinets and a insulated finished wall dividing the galley from the sleeping area.

Ok, you are going to have to stay with me on this one because it might get confusing.
The trailer came with one large rear door, swinging right hand reverse. I wanted to mount a folding shelf on the door with a hold open @ 180 degrees to put the stove on. When I first mounted the shelf on the original door, it flopped about and there was no way to cook on it. So I tore the door open and it has been slapped together with 3/4" pine.
Image
So, picture #1 is of the new door in a closed position, steel framed, insulated with new paneling. That is a full length hinge you see running down the center line of the doors.
Image
Picture #2 is of the first leaf opened. The second leaf is still latched by a top and bottom manual flush bolts.
Image
Picture #3 is of the second leaf open 180 degrees. You can just make out the flush bolts at the bottom and top of the door.
Image
Picture #4 is of the first leaf folded at a 30 degree angle along side the passenger side of the trailer. I am making a latch to secure this door to the wing/step you see at the bottom of the pic, there by locking the door leaf with the stove on it in it's 180 degree position. Blue tape is where the exterior shower connection will be.
Did that make sense to anybody?
Sorry everything is such a mess, I am moving too fast to keep cleaning up and the ideas are flowing.
The FWC is sitting on its dolly giving me dirty looks.

This is the hold open pin and tube I fabbed into the passenger side rear step.

Another view looking from rear toward the front looking between the hinges and the body.

This is where the pin stays while trailer is in transport mode.

This is the one thing I am really looking forward to. I don't have hot water in the FWC.
If you haven't seen these before, they come from Europe and are imported and sold by Adventure trailers.
I haven't figured out how to take it apart yet, but I will. I want to put a longer hose on it.

This is actually one of the first things I did. Two sliding windows with screens and I pulled the exterior bar latch and installed a standard RV style door latch.

And one of the new Fantastic Fans. Wired and ready to blow.
Covered roof exterior with elastomeric reflective coating. Makes a huge difference.
