What have I done?

Postby GregB » Fri Oct 07, 2005 5:42 pm

 Long story short. Wifely and I decide to get a Jeep. How am I going to carry ALL our camping gear? Start to look at 4x4 trailers. Very survivalist. Verrry expensive. Remember teardrop site. Spend next 2 weeks getting s---u--c-ked in. Found that Teardrop (or facsimile) is the answer. Here's where it gets interesting. Wife has been gone for 2 weeks. Haven't told her a thing. Bug has bit bad. Have designed whole TT. Have built mockup in garage. Wife comes home tonight. Pray for me.

With apologies to Teardroppers everywhere and especially to Rik Keller whose Road Toad ended up being my inspiration,...
Behold the 5x9 Minibago!

Oh boy is there gonna' be some 'splainin to do. For the strong of stomach and not faint of heart more pictures including lousy drawings are posted in my album. When she gets home we'll find out if this will fly or if it turns into a Crocodile Tear (kind of like vaporware in the software world).

I am still tring to determine if the hatch should be similar to a tear's or two vertical doors that swing open to each side, extending the ktchen and counter area with slideouts that rest on the open door.

Over the wheel is a 2'x2'x5' compartment accessible from each side, sealed from the inside. I could never figure out where you guys carry your dusty gear except on top of your beds, so I figured I'd put mine here. Also, I have reclined the front wall approximately 10 degrees to accomodate TV watching while sitting. Got some other ideas, but they're still rattling around and need work.

BTW, I know. It's a crappy prototype. Man, was it fun to build!
I'm not dead, yet. I'm feeling better.

Hey Greg,

That looks very cool to me... I'm off to visit your album...

If your wife disagrees,... we'll figure out sumthing! ;)

Mike...

P.S. I like the view looking out the front window!

go out and have an affair, tell her and then when she's screaming and throwing things you tell her about the trailer plans. problem solved (oh, you might want to remove all weapons from the house.)

good luck

Minibago - Better copywrite the plan before the real "bago" folks get a look and go into production. Very inovative design work. My wife is the one that got me building our Tear. I believe her exact words were, "quit whining and build the damn thing".

  For your plans.

I had an idea.... what if you lowered the ledge on the front, so that it's low enough to sit on while watching TV. Then maybe add a couple drop down tv trays from the wall so you can eat while watching TV?

Kinda like the Lil Diner or the Baja Benroy, without having to set up a table...

What do you think?

Excellent work - looks like a really nice shape. Post again so we learn if you have survived the homecoming - you don't want us to waste all our thoughts on someone who isn't still alive......

On that galley design, won't you be always banging your head on the back end of the roof? How about putting an angle in the rear at the coutertop height and then sloping the bit above that forward to meet the upper cabinets - that way, when you open the hatch, the bit you'd hit lifts up too.

Another idea is to use the same shape but split it into an upper hatch from the countertop up and two doors from the countertop down - should be very strong and very light, which is not a bad idea off-road.

Keep us posted.

Can you blame him? That cardboard mockup would scare any unsuspecting woman to death!  :laughter:

Gotta have faith in the system guys... Maybe his wife is still giving him ideas on cabinetry and color schemes so he can get started right away...
Or maybe she was so excited by the prospect she took him out to dinner...

You know, come to think of it, he's dead meat... anyone care to eulogize?
