Hey, this is a pretty timely thread for me. I have been looking for a CI waffle iron for the last week or so. Somebody who has bought one, where is the best place to buy? I found one place on the web that has new ones. There are lots on ebay, but I am not sure what I should be paying for one there. And there are some that they list as child's toys, that when they put a tape measure on them, look big enough to be working waffle irons.

Any advice or pointers would be helpful.

Waffle Iron 101
- bought one on ebay $24
-bought two at thrift stores $4- 10 after looking for over a year.

Low Base and High Base
Both cook well the high base models seem to cost a little more and take longer to heat up

Look for cracks, handles (mine are all wood), rust. Brands I have a Griswold (the low) Wagner the top one (oldest and it shows) and the Keen

I have seen collector irons go for $150 and those little toy ones are the most expensive. Thse Keen Kutter ones go for alot because there are people that only collect Keen Kutter stuff and these round out their collections. A pain to clean if you burn one. This one is a display. I got it for $4 at a thrift shop all rusty and full of gunk. Hit the electrolysis twice. I have cooked in it. the waffles tasted the same as the other two.

Anyone got a good method/recipe?
I need to perfect the deal by fall for the Fall Tear-Down.
I may just have to make breakfast for Dave and Kate, to redeem myself!!

Come on Steve! Wasn't THAT bad... don't you remember all the little guests that patiently waited for you to make another batch the next day?

Don't let 'em tease you, Steve

Postby Guy » Thu Jun 29, 2006 5:06 pm

Dear Steve,

Don't let them tease you. I would eat the second waffle you make anyday. As a matter of fact when you arrive at the Inaugural Reedwood Gathering next month we will break some waffles together.
Regards,

Guy

Thats it Steve... you practice at Redwood, and we'll tryem out at the Fall TearDown. You have a mission! (ok besides building slick campers).

I tried again this morning!
This is a different recipe, not Aunt Jamima's Complete, like in the first two failed attempts. The centers were dry, and they split when I opened the iron. I got this recipe from the Betty Crocker Cookbook.
Here's the "dog" ...Oops, Lyndsay ate it!
Image
And a bit better..maybe a "kitty"?
Image
One for Phyll..
Image
And the rest came out better!
Image
Looks like the recipe was the trick!
Thanks for all of the suggestions!
PS. I also made my first cake in a new 12-incher..MMM Good! I'm finishing the last piece right now! :ok:
