Postby JamesW » Sat Jul 31, 2004 12:44 am

Where is a good source for aluminum sheets of 5 x 10?

Ryan, How giant are the sheets? Who has them? I'm interested.
James,
5x10 is not out of the ordinary but not cheap. I went a size larger to 5x12 of .063" thick Alloy 5052. My high test (one sheet only) bid was $166.63ea. I expect to pay about $125ish a sheet when I work a complete materials order. I hope that gives you a reference point. D. Tillery

Maybe I can go in on your order, depending on when you do it (I'll need to get some money). Will they give a price break with a bigger order? I'm in Austin.

Asianflava,
I usually place my larger orders with Trident in Austin. They run a truck to SA on Tues and Thurs, "free" delivery with $200 order, no problem with aluminum. Since you are there, you might give them a call. They handle all types of extrusions and are pretty good about faxing you spec sheets on them. I also order out of Houston (Notrh Shore). If you need it cut, welded, rolled, etc., I can help too.
I hear there is a group in Fredricksberg, TX that is trying to Co-op on building several tears, split up the tasks into specialties. Have you heard anything about them?

Ryan,
Awesome. How versatile! I guess they ship it rolled-up which could present some memory problems but that's correctable. I need more info. How can I contact them? Thank you, D. Tillery

The thing is they dont ship it to you, you go get it. And you can get it at any big trucking buisness. When they build trucks with the 8 foot high covered beds like fed x or ups they use aluminum. All you have to do is call around to big truck builing companier and ask them about scrap aluminum. The price changes every day because they just look at how much it is worth by the pound. They ask ya how long of a roll you need, they wheigh it out, and thats it.

Thanks for the info, I'll give them a call. Pickup won't be a problem I guess. I can probably hold off on ordering until I get to the point when I need it. I am in the initial stages, kinda gathering up materials. I just decided to go with a modrenistic design so I just ordered a set of plans last night.

I haven't heard about the guys in fredricksburg. My wife is telling me that if I'm going to build one TD I should build 3. She knows that as soon as our father's see it, they will both want one. I'll see how the first one goes.

Asianflava,
I'm swamped through Christmas in the shop so I'm designing, drawing and learning all I can from the group postings until 1st Qtr '05. Stay in touch since you are so close. If you need any metalworking assistance, let me know. I'm in this project for fun only so we can probably work something out. If you have some basic metalworking skills and promise not to hurt yourself, you can come down and do it yourself.
Ryan,
Thanks for the info on the aluminum.

A cheap drug spammer was trying to pawn their $hit here. Mike put the kibosh to 'em pretty quick.
Couple of posts got deleted because their link was in them.
