Bought it in Richmond and spent 4 days driving it back to Tallahassee. Kind of a Poor Man's diesel Gelandewagen

Thought I'd get in on this...

This is our "labor of Love"...

It doesn't pull the camper nearly as well with the bigger tires & lift but it looks a lot better and a WHOLE lot more trail capable.Image[/img]

1993 Mitsubishi Delica

Postby coquitlamglenn » Thu Feb 11, 2010 10:02 pm

I'm a new member from Canada. I have a few other pics in my intro. These Vans are very popular with outdoor enthusiasts in Canada since they became eligible to import into canada from Japan (15 yrs old).

They feature a 2.5 litre turbo diesel, and share mechanicals with the Mitsubishi Montero. They are very capable offroad, plus they sit 7 people. Plus, I love driving a cab over (you sit on the engine compartment.)

Looks great! Perhaps you could go to a lower gear. I'm running 35's on my Jeep with 3 1/2" of lift, and with 5.13 gears and a Superchips tune it tows pretty well, in spite of all the drag from the height of it.

I had a friend that offroaded with his Corolla. He even went as far as getting it lifted, with some big (well, big for the Corolla) tires on it. It was hilarious, then he flipped it on a trail... And it was even more hilarious (he was fine, car definitely was toast).

I had a friend in So. Cal who was an industrial designer. He had the same, 3-cylinder, 49 MPG, 2-door Geo Metro. He could fabricate anything in his large shop. He took out the passenger seat and made a long bed in its place. He built a trailer hitch for it that bolted through the floor/under carriage in eight places, with a big backing plate. He got a Harbor Freight trailer, put 13" mud and snow tires on it (same as the Geo), packed the trailer with camping gear, gas cans, spare parts, spare tires, tools and a propane bottle, then drove to Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada on the MacKenzie River delta (Beaufort Sea/Arctic Ocean) for the longest day of the year. 457 miles on the Dempster Highway, all gravel.

That sold me on the car.

BTW, my other vehicle is a 1-ton. :)

The Deepest spot in Lake Superior, the largest of the Great Lakes is 1,333 feet or about 222 fathoms. This profound depth could easily contain the entire 1,250' Empire State Building, even with a 50-foot-tall King Kong perched atop.
