Design & Construction of anything that's not a teardrop e.g. Grasshoppers or Sunspots

Need Help. Mike, Andrew anyone!!

Ok my Wife and I have finely decided on a design, Mike suggested maybe a Ben-Hopper after I voiced that my Wife liked the style of the Grasshopper and I liked the Benroy.

So we have decided to build a tiny trailer very similar to Rik Keller’s Road Toad.

My question is on axle location, I plan to have the trailer built again around the design of the Road Toad the weight in the rear is going to be approximately 230 lb. less the weight of the cabinets. Just to list what I will be carrying in the rear galley area to help understand my madness, two deep cycle batteries, Atwood furnace, 5 gallons of water, 20 lb. propane tank and a cooler.

Up front in the tongue box I would like to add an air conditioner. The air conditioner weight is 50 lb.

So will this work, and if so how far back should the axle be mounted? The length of the frame is 14’.

Thanks for you opinions.
Jeff.

Jeff,

Skip to the end of my trailer balance page and follow the instructions.

You will need:
- various measurments from your trailer design;
- the total weights of the stuff you are carrying and the basic trailer;
- a guess of where you think (or Rik thought) the axle should be.

You just try putting in different axle positions until the answer (hitch weight) comes out right.

Reading the first four sections of the page is optional!
