Funny you should mention blood, Lee. I did cut a chunk of skin off my left thumb while prepping dinner the first night. Ouch, but not the first time. Poor eye-hand coordination I suppose.

I like the wide open feeling and, at my height, I can just see over the rim of the opening. When closed, weather sealing isn't an issue. Bugs would be a problem, but, as you know, we don't have many of the flying variety around these parts.

Perhaps in the Fall.

I know what you mean, Mike. Perhaps you could do a removable insert? Velcro or snaps? Or maybe have it roll up inside the roof when you didn't want it in the way.

I will have snaps top and bottom. I'll go for the fewest number necessary especially on the top for just the reason you suggest.

Velcro doesn't hold up for long in the intense heat.

Lots of traveling of the non-trailer kind. Nearly 3 weeks in France, Switzerland, and Italy in May. Since late June in Chicago and back home in early August.

May head out in the Airstream then but probably not the Canadian Rockies trip I had hoped because the season is getting too late.

At long last, I have been able to put my trailer on a scale. Drumroll please....

1,420 pounds including 22 lbs for the Porta-potti, 15 lbs of food and beverages, and 20 lbs of propane.

I had been a bit worried that the weight was approaching a ton, which wouldn't have given me much margin over the 2,680 lbs combined capacity of the tires or the 2,500 lbs capacity of the torsion axle.

When I expect to dry camp, I add 12 gallons of water and I'll usually have more food, books, or other small items. So at most I'd probably top out at 1,600 pounds or so. I'm okay with that.

BTW, today I got my best towing mileage ever: 20.9 mpg. The 125 miles between Catalina State Park at an elevation of 2,600 feet and our home in Goodyear at 1,000 feet is mostly downhill. That, combined with the windless day, modest temperatures (no A/C), 55 mph cruising, 48 psi in the tires, and our magnificently smooth rubberized-asphalt highways, all account for the terrific performance. I guess the Dodge at 90,000 miles on the odo is finally getting broken in. I think I'll retire the trophy now.

I've been in conversation with Custom RV Windows about getting the crank-out windows to operate properly, i.e., close from the inside instead of having to push shut from the outside.

Can you tell me more about this window ? I can't find Custom Rv Windows. What I really want is the pin-hinged mechanism. What would I type into a search?

I did locate a site with this mechanism. I've emailed for info.

The company, Custom RV Windows, is an operation of Callen Camper Co. and an Ebay seller. You can see their current offers at http://stores.ebay.com/Custom-RV-Windows .

Their inventory changes quite a bit from time to time, so if you don't see what you like now, email them with your needs. They might be able to locate the perfect window for you even though it is not currently in stock.

I did go to that site. Thanks. Got the Kinro brand name from there, which led me to the replacement parts at Parkin Accessories in Elkhart IN.

I have 5 crank out awning windows in my '66 VW camper. Two have no operating mechanisms. In a couple of decades looking, I've had no luck finding replacements. I think this will do the trick.
