Thanks, Nancy. You're doing an impressive rebuild on yours! I love that so many women are now working on camping trailers. You go, girl!

Thanks, Bob. I haven't forgotten to post more inside pics but I am trying to get a little bit more done before I snap more with the roof up.

Today, I added the curtain tie-backs and door straps. (Because I have awning style windows, door straps limit the door opening to keep open windows from damaging the sides of the trailer.)

It’s amazing how much time these little details can take! (I'm still working on the upholstery, too.....You can see a corner of one of the cushions in that last picture.)

The curtains look really nice Sharon. Nice tasteful choice of pattern and they work really well with the neutral solid texture of the cushions.

Have you been camping yet?

Postby Oldragbaggers » Tue Aug 23, 2011 8:47 pm

I am just wondering if you have camped in your trailer yet? It looks so inviting. The fall is such a beautiful season, I should think it would be hard to resist getting it out there.

Sharon

Your curtains look really nice, Also a door strap is a good idea. Question, how did you make your door strap?

Thanks, Larry.

Here’s how I made the door straps:

- The four 1" strap holders were purchased from ACE Hardware.

- The 1" wide nylon strapping material was purchased from the local fabric store (Joann Fabrics).

- I cut the straps to the size I wanted plus the turn-under amount and an extra 1/4".

- The extra 1/8" on each end was then sealed by melting the edge with fire. (I used the flame from my kitchen gas stove; but, you could probably use a camp stove or even a lighter.)

CAUTION: Allow the melted nylon to cool before touching! (I have the burnt fingers to prove it! )

- The previously allotted amount of tape for the hem was turned under and sewed down well, allowing room for a pocket for the strap holder to be slipped into. You can sew these by hand or by machine. I used nylon thread and actually allowed a little extra turn under so I could put in two rows of double stitching; but, I tend to over-do things.

TIPS:

It is probably best to attach your metal strap holders where you want them and then take a measurement of the area between the outside edges of the two holders, with your door open as wide as you want it to go. (That’s usually a 90 degree angle to the side of the trailer.) Add the ¼â€

Ma'am,

Those safety straps are exceptional.

When I made mine I found my sewing machine had stitched it's last stitch making the curtains, so I took a piece of nylon strap, heat sealed the end, folded it over, poked a hole in it with a hot coat hanger then attached it with an 1 1/4" screw and a trim washer on each end. I like the looks of yours better.

I think you can too!
WOW, that is a pretty slick trailer. What a great project. Lots of innovation. The interior is coming along very nicely.
I would like to applaud you on your efforts.
"GREAT JOB" and keep up the good work...

Sharon,

The curtains look fantastic! I think they really go well with your interior finishes!

Thank you for pointing out the door straps. When you mentioned them previously, I made mental note that I needed to do the same...but as usual I forgot.

The MyAway build really has your personal signature. Thank you for sharing with us.

Take care,
Tom

Thanks, Zach, Steve, Eezerz, and Tom. :)

By the way, if you have a piece of cut-off nylon strap from a tie-down or old sleeping bag strap or whatever, it would work just as well as buying nylon strapping material from the fabric shop.

Steve Cox's way of making door straps might be easier and better for some and I'll bet he got his right on the first try!
