custom sized mattress

Postby Ryda » Wed Feb 11, 2015 9:55 pm

Hi, everyone. I am building a 4'x8' trailer on a Tractor supply Company utility trailer. I am planning to take the family on a long trip this Summer. As the wife and I will be sleeping in the tear for weeks on end, I would like to get a decent mattress. Does anyone know of a source for a custom sized (hopefully reasonably priced) quality mattress?

There are still small factories that make custom mattresses. Do a search in your area for "custom mattresses" and something will probably come up within driving distance. It's been too long for me to remember how much I paid for mine but at the time it was more resonable than I ever expected. Yankee Mattress Factory has a few stores in your state.

There is a custom mattress factory here in Chico, CA called Square Deal Mattress Factory and I never though of them making a custom for a TD before. Great folks and I'm sure they're online.
Enjoy, Chris

I did like Rob suggested. I went to a small mattress company and had one made. They have several types and firmness of foam and they let me try them out before building my mattress. I agree, a good mattress is worth spending the money on. Others have bought a standard bed size piece of foam and cut it with an electric knife and sewed a cover for it. Less money, more work.

You can buy a memory foam mattress and cut it down to fit. Probably your cheapest alternative. Find one that is just the foam is probably easiest. There are a variety available on Amazon.

We just bought the sleep sensations 6" from Walmart. Very Pleased with it. They have an 8" too. Payed 179 for King size and cut it down just slightly with an electric knife. (our trailer is 6 wide)

I have had both a 6" and 8" foam mattress, from Walmart.

If you need to customize it you'll find it very easy to cut with an electric knife, just slip the cover right back on.

They often go on sale with free delivery to the store and both time I scored with free delivery to my house.

I like these folks, who make a variety of "single" mattress sizes, located in chicago. I kinda like the idea of a spring coil mattress. They make both coil and foam. lots of single sizes to choose from. Truck-Cot-Rollaway-Dorm-Sofa Sleeper sizes. I have not purchased from them yet tho...

Hi Friends,
My mattress is 6" foam cut to width and length and then I cut it down the middle lengthwise on a diagonal. When travelling and storing i stack the mattress' on top of the other so I can haul/store my crates on the floor and it doesn't squish my foam. By cutting it on the diagonal the pieces overlap and it doesn't make a gasm to fall into while you sleep. The remnants were covered into pillows. If I were to have to sit inside I'd rather sit on 12" instead of 6". The only upgrade for me would be closed cell foam. Memory foam is stupid for all the hype it gets.
Enjoy, Chris

FYI, One item about using foam if you live in areas that freeze, so will foam. Latex will not freeze. Now onto a good night sleep!

I scored two 3" foam/memory foam mattress toppers t a Wal-Mart Black Friday sale for a total of $62. Not bad for a 6" mattress
