If you painted, how many coats of primer and paint?

Postby cracker39 » Sat Mar 19, 2011 3:52 pm

I’m at the exterior finishing stage of my TTT. And for those of you who painted your trailer, I’d like to see how many coats of resin, primer, and paint you put on yours. Which to you consider more important apply two coats, primer or paint. If you did two coats of either that is.

I’ve feathered the edges of cloth on the joints (twice) and yesterday I applied my 3rd overall coat of polyester resin to the plywood skin. While the resin was given the day to cure I built my two tongue boxes. Tomorrow, I sand the resin for the final time and will start priming and painting.

I have nearly a full gallon of Behr latex porch and deck and I just bought a gallon of Glidden latex porch and deck as I’m partial to Glidden. I bought one gallon of Glidden Gripper primer that is stated on the can that it will stick to glass. I thought about one coat of primer and one coat of the Behr, followed by one coat of the Glidden. Both are low-luster or satin (depending on brand). None of the latex porch and deck enamels come in gloss anymore (sadly to say). I wonder if latex enamel would take a coat of wax and shine???

We did 2 coats of CPES (brushed on), 2 coats of primer (rolled on) and I think 4 coats oil based hammered finish paint (sprayed on). I think it worked out real well, but, the trailer also spends most of its life garaged, so its not exposed to the weather except when on a trip. I think the coats of CPES were the most important and the later coats of the hammered paint looked better with each coat that went on. My son does professional faux finish work and sprayed the paint on with a high quality "high volume-low pressure" sprayer system. I know I could never have gotten such a smooth high quality finish without him doing it for me.

Good luck,

Mike

I applied 5 coats of polyester resin on mine. Most primers and paints adhere better when applied in two or more coats. The general rule with any sprayed on paint at least is a light first coat. The light first coat, will allow a heavier second coat without running.

I put two coats of epoxy primer over my sanded polyester, and followed up in a couple hours with two coats of paint.

I prefer latex paint to oil based for it durability and ability to stretch and congtract with temperature changes. Although I have sprayed latex paints when I did craft shows, I used a roller on the Squidget and the finish turned out pretty good. I don't think that spraying would have looked much better, if any better. Besides, I no longer have a good pressure gun that can handle latex paints, and all the masking involved is too much work for me at my age.

Hi Dale,
I did 2+2+2
....2 coats of marine epoxy, 2 coats of Lowe's Valspar Oil based primer, 2 coats of Lowe's Valspar Oil based high gloss deck and porch enamel.
I did the top coats 'roll and tip'....I'm hoping it will hold up well; I plan on keeping it garaged

2 coats of CPES
3 coats primer
5 coats topcoat

All layers of paint were thinned and rolled on with a foam roller. Hand sanding between each coat starting at 120 and ending at 2000 grit. Most people that see it don't think it's painted wood. :D

first time i painted 5 years ago i used a urathane poarch and deck enamel. same stuff i used on my sailboat i made. sailboat is still looking good after ten years, but it was sealed with fiberglass resin. the tear i didn;t prime or seal just the urathane.

after five years outdoors the tear needed repaint. so this winter i sanded it down not fretting too much where the paint was sticking well. then used 2 coats of biehr exterior paint with built in primer.
will see how it does.

also its important to note this is not a fancy trailer, it was made for my dog and i to go hunting.

if i build a new one for my wife, assumiing she likes teardrops which i will find out in a few weeks. i will most likely use higher grades of both wood and paint.
