Alternatives to using a Pop up awning

Postby Pottercounty » Sun Mar 27, 2011 9:13 am

Our 10 x 10 popup awning is great but, kind of a hassle to set up, not to mention the space it takes up when stored & the weight.
We have been looking around at the "SUV tents" and there are a quite a few to consider however, they are compact & light weight to store and not as much work to put up.
Are any of you currently using this type of tent & how do you like it?

I'll include a link as to what I'm referring to:

Thanks!!

Wow, great timing! I was wondering about all the side tents and shelters that the people are using. I sure would like some suggetions of what people are using or a link to them. I looked at the Kelty site. What I am looking for would be something that gives some privacy at the door to change clothes or wash up if needed.

When necessary I'll set up an EZ-Up and a privy tent. Often a shade tree serves the purpose.

Those tents in your link don't look easy to set up either. I'm in the process of making a simple 11' x 11' tarp out of waterproof nylon for a canopy. One pole will actually attach to the trailer, so I'm hoping it will be a simple setup for one person.

I use a Kelty Carport alongside my tear for a small privacy area. Mine didn't have sides, so I made drop down sides that I clip on, and have chains threaded thru the bottom hem to keep them from blowing too much.

Mine is the small or medium size, but I remember seeing someone with the large side set up over the galley as well.

I've also used it alongside my car (low profile subaru impreza) as an impromptu tent.

I use weighted exercise belts to hold the top bar in place, as I have no rails on top of my TD to strap it to.

tent?

Postby Dave S » Sun Mar 27, 2011 2:27 pm

But then, isn't that tenting? I have a 4x4 (ish) shower/potty/changing tent which I have set up once, and never used. My EZup (which isn't) gets used but more as shade and rain (?) protection than anything else. All of them, even tents, can be a pain in the rear. But then again, I could use my old (classic) MH if I wanted more room. So many choices. My Tear works fine for what she can do.....and I love her for it.

I have to somewhat agree with you Paul however, I'm also thinking about less bulk & weight to carry plus, it would be easier for one person to erect than our 10x10 popup canopy. Don't know what I'll do as yet but I am leaning toward the SUV tent...
You're awning looks to have great promise, I hope its a success!

I have just made some racks for a roof top tent with side annex and am also mounting an awning to the racks.

Easy to put up by myself and with the annex on one side and this on the other about perfect for my use.

All the poles are telescopic and fold into the aluminium channel that is part of the awning.
