asphalt emulsion

Postby Boanerges4 » Mon Jun 13, 2011 9:00 pm

I was wondering if anyone has ever used HENRYS asphalt emulsion from Home Depot to seal bottom side of floor. I bought a gallon today and used it on floor, the label states that it is waterproof and it goes on real easy. I finished the first coat and thought I would put a second coat for insurance. If anyone has used this product please give me some feed back. Thanks

Trailer bottom

Postby nrody » Mon Jun 13, 2011 9:17 pm

I think a lot of folks have used various asphalt emulsions on the bottom of their trailers.
I actually was going to use Lowes version, around $11 bucks per gallon.
Then I went to a local rv repair place and they were so very nice with advice. The guy said to go to NAPA and get a product that is a rubberized undercoating. Not sure how much it is or the size, but it seems like it may be something to check out.

If anyone has used the stuff from NAPA let me know what you think.

Someday I just may get the floor in the trailer and will be ready to waterproof.

I have used the spray on undercoating from NAPA and it worked well. When ever I get a hitch for a truck, I make sure that it fits, then I remove it and spray it with NAPA or 3M undercoating and the hitch doesn't get rusty and its in a lot worse road conditions than a trailer will be. Ed.

Yes, many of us here have used it with great results. I think I used one coat.

After much thinkin and rumination I have decided that on my next build there will be no "black goo". I am going to cut some spar varnish with mineral spirits, 50/50 and give it at least 2 coats with that and then with the full strength spar varnish.

The only reason I can see that we use the black goo is cause it makes the bottom of the trailers black like the manufactured RVs.

Just my thoughts

Oh, and the Henry's stuff is pretty good if you go the "black goo" route. I have used it on other projects. like roofs and leaking cement walls. Things it was made for.

I did two coats of the 25/75 mixture and then the Henrys black goo. I suspect anything that is put on will be a benefit.

Three coats of varnish on everything!
I love the smell of varnish in the morning!
Smells like money to me. Grew up in the
family paint mfg. business. Started at the
bottom putting labels on the cans.
