Wide Aluminum

Postby jeff0520 » Sun Jan 27, 2013 9:51 am

Hey everybody,
I've seen a lot of discussion about where to get wide widths of aluminum. I found part of the answer last week and I thought I'd toss it out and see if it's helpful.
I drive a tractor trailer for a living pulling a flatbed trailer. Last week Reynolds Aluminum in Malvern Arkansas loaded a 38,000 pount coil of .040 mill finish aluminum on my truck that was 74" wide.I hauled that coil to the Reynolds Aluminum Foil plant in Louisville Kentucky. I tried to talk to the local people there about cutting me off some of that, but when I asked them to sell me some, they seemed to hear "steal" instead of sell. :(
That's where the product we are all looking for can be found. Maybe somebody here is a titan in the business world and can figure out the correct deal to make to get some of that lovely wide aluminum into the teardrop world .
Have fun y'all
:)

Surely you have a tractor-trailer repair facility like Great Dane, or Fruehauf, etc. near where you live. They replace the aluminum roof on semi trailers with new .040 mill finish, stored on rolls, 103" wide! The shop near me will sell this over the counter for somewhere near $11 per linear foot. Have used it many times. Here is the prototype of the Whetzeldorf with the same aluminum...that is a one-piece roof from the front frame all the way to the back bumper!

Jeff,
Just North of Louisville is a place called APEX trailer repair, just of HWY 31. I purchased it by the foot like Dan mentioned, though it was a little more expensive. I think I give around $13 per lin foot. It is VERY soft, and scrathes easy. They didn't take any extra measures to protect the inner coils from rubbing, shucks, they put it on top of semi trailers, you'll never see the scratches from 20'. ;) Fun to work with those big sheets by yourself.

They also carry the Filon / fiberglass sheet type stuff on the roll too.

Although I'm sure with your profession, there are closer places to home for you.

RV Surplus in Indiana.

Aluminum: http://www.rvsurplus.net/catalog/displa ... uct_id=419 0.023" thick, 103" wide, 15' to 40' in 5' increments. $225 for the first 15'.

Filon: http://www.rvsurplus.net/catalog/displa ... ct_id=1879 Roughly $21 a foot in 5' increments 100" wide, 0.055" thick.

Your best bet is to find a truck box and trailer fixing place in your area that will sell you some.

You'll need to make a crate to haul it home in as it is difficult to hold down. All the crate needs to do is restrain the roll of Aluminum.

Maybe I'm wrong but .040 aluminum is kinda thick to be rolled up in a coil. I used sheet aluminum on my camper that is .040 and I just can't imagine it being rolled up.

All depends on how tight you roll it...
