Where do you keep your cooler?

Postby wlivesey » Fri Apr 26, 2013 6:30 am

It seems like some folks like to keep their cooler/fridge in their car versus in their trailer. Where do you like to keep yours and why?

We have two. One is an old Coleman icebox that lives in our galley. The galley was actually designed to accommodate it, and the cubby around it is insulated. Some folks don't want to take up galley space with a cooler, but the icebox is our fridge, and we'd do it the same way again. We keep all non-drink stuff and milk in the icebox...dairy, meats, etc. Works like a charm.

The other is for drinks only, since we're in and out of that one most often. Usually keep it in a shady spot under our kitchen prep table. Keeping drinks separate allows us to have a smaller drink cooler instead of dumping everything into one big one. Much more manageable, and no more lugging around a giant, unorganized cooler.

Others' mileage may vary. Image

In the tow vehicle. It's convenient, stays cooler & is out of the way. If I need it closer, I do have a stand for it to keep it off of the ground. Normally, it's too heavy for me to easily move anyway.

I have enough room in my galley that I can fit three 50QT coolers under my counter. Unfortunately my new 52qt Coleman Xtreme 5 is about 1/2" too tall, so that one rides in the trunk of my car.

Looks like we may have too many??
When we travel with the Stude PU we have two colmans in the back.
Now with the TD we have added one wet cooler and one DC/AC cooler in the galley, bringing our total to 4 coolers.
That should give us enough beer room??
We mostly only drink red wine, so no cooler needed for that. :wine:
We will report back as to how this works out for us after the Dam Run.

I have a small cooler just sits on the galley shelf. Since it is just me I do not take much. I wish I could find one that stayed cool more than 12 hours and was still smal

In the tow vehicle, unless it's really hot.

By putting it in the trailer, the cooler can slowly lower the temperature in the trailer by about 10 degrees, and that's using one of those 5 day coolers! However, you don't usually need or want to cool the trailer down at night. (I'm talking about sitting it on or near the bed, not in an outside galley.)

Putting the cooler in the trailer during the day, when it is really hot outside, will not only cool the trailer but also make ones ice last longer because the wood and/or foam trailer naturally stays cooler than a closed -up or out-in-the-sun tow vehicle. (Here, I'm talking about either in an outside galley or on/near the bed.)

Also, traveling with the cooler in the tow vehicle saves trailer weight.

Hi Bill! Do y'all still live in NRH?

We use two small coolers and one plastic container for our food products. One cooler is for adult beverages and other drinks. The other is for food that needs to be refrigerated. The plastic container is for dry goods. We keep all three inside the pick-up on the back floor (seats folded up.) Our TD has room for the dry goods, but the plastic container makes it easier to move them inside and outside of our home. We don't have room in the TD for a cooler. By storing the food in the car, we don't have to worry about the critters getting into our stores.

Take care,
Tom

Both are carried n the tv. When arrived, food goes on the side of the tear.

Drink chest goes where ever it is cool. This set up allows to put in bear boxes easily when required.

We keep the cooler in the truck. I added some stout tie downs because I didn't want the cooler sliding into the cab every time we stopped.

The less weight I have on the hitch reciever, the better. So, I carry all of the heavy stuff in the 4 banger Chevy Cruze and only haul the bedding in the TD. Oh well, besides that, I must have the goofy Jack-in-the-Box head, swinging to and fro in the window of the tear, which usually is greeted with a smile by passing on-lookers.

Thanks for all the great feedback! I've been designing my next build and have been going back and forth on cooler placement. I really like the idea of two smaller coolers as many of you are already doing. If nothing else, two small coolers are easier to move around than one big one. It also gives more options on where to keep them. Thanks again everyone...

Hey Tom, Yes, I'm still in NRH. I've been getting the itch to build again. I sure hope the boss let's me.

We have one in the galley, a regular Igloo cooler, that will be for drinks, snacks and things we access often. Our Rigid Frigid, which is too big for our galley, will hold ice for a week and keeps things very cold, so that's where our food will go since it will not get opened as often. That one will stay in the truck.

I keep two coolers in the Road Foamie. One is strictly for beverages. It's actually a jockey box for my homebrew draft system and other beverages. The other holds all the food. The food cooler goes in the bear boxes at night. Don't want any hungry visitors in the middle of the night!
